I don’t know if this is true but my offspring says that lobsters will eat the onion in the pan in an attempt to make themselves feel better because they feel so scared. So you know, we shouldn’t eat lobster.

The 2020-21 Over Needingworth excavations revealed an area of preserved wooden stakes/posts and stake/postholes, with 58 being fully excavated and recorded. Dating to the Roman period the stakes and posts reflected use of the land when the area had transformed from a prehistoric dry land to fen.
A wooden stake in situ that is in the process of being excavated with a black and white scale bar.

So awful to hear of the passing of Dr Rena Maguire today. A huge loss, and gone far too soon. She had a unique understanding of prehistory as intimately tethered to cultural history. I will miss that insight. Rest in peace.

The first phase of Over Needingworth’s Barrow 20 involved an in-situ cremation event followed by the construction of a turf mound. The cremation took place directly on the buried soil surface and left traces of the pyre remains.
An overhead drone shot showing a round barrow in the process of being excavated. Four slots one in each quadrant are present and the dark ring of the ditch is visible at the edge of the barrow.

This morning it was announced that several pieces of 7th c. BCE Greek (Cretan) armor and other antiquities in the #MetMuseum were repatriated to Greece. Looted in the 1960s from Crete, this includes two helmets, and three mitrai (belly guards). A look at three items ... 🧵 🏺 1/ 📸 me
Bronze helmet with two winged youths on each side who flank and grasp a pair of entwined serpents. They are dressed in short kilts, wear winged sandals and have wings on their backs that appear to be attached with straps. Although some scholars have identified these figures as the legendary Cretan craftsman Daidalos and his son Icarus, they probably represent local daemonic beings. Below them are two panthers with a common head.

Inscription above the visor: 'Neopolis'.

Greek, Cretan, late 7th century BCE. From Afrati (or Aphrati, ancient Arkades), Crete.

Met Museum, New York (1989.281.50)One of two bronze Archaic Cretan helmets at the Met Museum, the finest pieces of a large cache of armor that came to light in southern central Crete, where they were undoubtedly made. It has a beautiful patina of bright greens and rich, deep orange-reds. The inscriptions suggest that the armor was captured as booty and offered as a dedication. This helmet depicts two long-legged horses worked in repoussé with incised details (one on each side). Small engraved lions appear on the cheekpieces. An inscription on the helmet states that “Synenitos the son of Euklotas [took this].”

Greek, Cretan, late 7th century BCE (Archaic). Said to be from Afrati, Crete.

Height: 9 5/8 in. (24.5 cm)

Met Museum, New York (1989.281.49)Bronze mitra (belly guard), shaped like a slightly long half-circle. Mitra were suspended from belts to protect the lower abdomen. This is one of three, and is decorated with two sphinxes facing one another, their heads turned towards the viewer. They were tall polos-style hats.

Met Museum, New York (1989.281.53). Deaccessioned for return to the Hellenic Republic in September 2026.

No wonder the Eddisbury hillfort excavations were big. W.J. Varley’s ‘Bickerton Camp Scheme’ employed 100 unemployed Liverpool men as excavators in 1936. I had no idea it was working at that scale. This is what happens when you integrate working class scholars.

Physicist Dr. Ursula Franklin helped invent archaeometry--the application of materials science to analyze archaeological artifacts. She used modern physics tools to date/determine the compositions of ancient metals & ceramics to uncover how ancient peoples lived/worked. Born #OTD 1921. #WomenInSTEM
A charming photograph of Dr. Ursula Franklin (1921–2016), the pioneering Canadian experimental physicist, metallurgist, and humanitarian activist. She is positioned slightly off-center against a minimalist, solid slate-blue backdrop. Captured from the chest up, she looks off-camera to the right with a bright, genuine smile that showcases her warmth and sharp intellect. Her short, styled silver-grey hair frames her face, and she wears thin-framed, amber-toned glasses. She is dressed in a crisp, purple-and-white vertically striped button-down shirt. Around her neck hangs a delicate silver chain supporting a striking teardrop-shaped pendant featuring a vibrant orange-red stone or amber setting. The lighting is soft and even, accentuating the fine lines of a long, accomplished life. The clean, professional composition evokes a mood of joyful wisdom, deep dignity, and enduring historical significance, celebrating a legendary woman in STEM.

When my colleagues and I started digging around in CDC data on pregnancy-related deaths, we noticed something surprising: the rate of ectopic pregnancy deaths had more than doubled in recent years. Nearly 200 women died between 2020 and 2025. So we set out to learn why 🧵
A chart showing an increase in the rate of deaths after an ectopic pregnancy, normalized by the number of live births. In the three-year period starting in 2014, the rate is a little above 4 deaths per million live births. The rate rises sharply for the 2020-2022 period and continues to increase, to 9.8 deaths per million births, in 2023-2025.

The likely family of my endowed chair (1948) are here. A ship named Liberty bought people as slaves in West Africa in the 1760s. On the second in 1763, 741 embarked, 605 disembarked. A third and final in 1804 took people from the Bight of Biafra and Gulf of Guinea Islands: britishslavetraders.org

I’ve been slowly writing the history of northern Iron Age studies in tandem with Ian Ralston (over 30 years). Ian’s new paper now shows that W.J. Varley was right on hillfort ramparts, and Wheeler (as ever) wrong. Regardless, the southerner went on to a glittering TV career, the northerner let go.
