It’s been a long journey to get here but I celebrated my PhD graduation today! 🎉 🙌

What does it mean to lead with curiosity in research culture? 🤔 I wrote a blog about why I think curiosity is a key value and skill for research leaders along with some thoughts on how to be more curious. www.gla.ac.uk/research/az/...

I really enjoyed running* an arts and crafts session at the Politics of Research Culture workshop in Leeds today. We imagined what future research cultures could look like. *I really really just needed an excuse to do crafts!
A collage about research cultures. There’s a black background, a pink heart in the middle, and four headlines that were negative but I’ve replaced some of the words to make them more positive. They read:

“UK considers what life would look like with a well funded research scheme”

“People are more kind”

“Show me more care”

“How long do scientists spend prioritising self care each year?”

I got so angry I wrote about it in my PhD thesis 😭
Through testing this programme using my own ORCID ID, I discovered OpenAlex had misattributed publications by other researchers sharing my name to my ORCID ID. This was not a problem with ORCID but rather a problem with
OpenAlex attempting to fill in missing data where an author had published an article without using an ORCID ID. OpenAlex does have a feedback mechanism to report data errors such as this, but it relies on first being aware that the issue exists. Lack of transparency over which OpenAlex data is taken directly from sources such as ORCID and which is "guessed" to fill in missing data is unfortunately a major issue with this resource.

I attended the MORPHSS open research catalogue launch today (catalogue.morphss.work) and I really love this way of thinking about open research practices. Although MORPHSS has focused on AHSS disciplines, I do think there is a lot that STEM disciplines can learn from the project too.
Figure 1: MORPHSS typology: Forms of openness in AHSS and their overarching categories

Six overlapping circles showing forms of openness, grouped into three categories. These are:

Openness as access/ible dissemination (including Accessible communication of research and Availability of outputs),

Openness as the rich realisation of research (including Evidentiary openness and Process openness), and

Openness as equitable and inclusive knowledge creation (including Participatory openness and Epistemic openness)

Really excited to have started a new role on the InFrame project at the University of Edinburgh. InFrame focuses on research culture, collegiality, and diverse leadership, which are all close to my heart ❤️

Slowly getting back into doing crafts and making art. Today’s project was some cherry shaped curtain tiebacks 🍒
Light green curtains tied back with a length of green crocheted yarn. The yarn is tied in a bow and there are dark red pom poms attached to each end of the yarn, making it look like a bunch of cherries

Just received this invite to join the Editorial Board of a Springer Nature journal I previously peer reviewed for. While I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity, especially at my career stage, I declined because I’m focusing my energy on supporting non-profit and diamond OA journals instead.
An email with identifying details censored that reads:

Just finished reading Rainbow Trap by @kevinguyan.bsky.social and found it so insightful. The idea of “box breakers” resonated with me so much. Incredibly worthwhile read for anyone working with or interested in queer data.

Had a lovely guided nature walk around the park near my office. Spotted a lot of berries (hawthorn, rowan, rosehip) and a few fungi 🍄‍🟫

I’m finally getting back into creative / sci fi & fantasy writing (after months of having no energy for anything outside my PhD) and I’m really pleased that I’ve managed to get my work in progress up to 6,000 words ⭐️ Feels like a pretty big deal for someone that usually writes flash fiction 🥹

Had a lovely time in St Andrews today speaking on a panel about reproducible research at the EastBio PhD symposium. Topics included AI, open access, and rewards/incentives.
