Between the British Nationality Act 1948 and the British Nationality Act 1981, UK-born citizens were part of a larger group called "Citizens of the UK and Commonwealth", & had no other distinct label, in law. Only in 1981 was "British citizenship" made a category.

Professor Wolfers is a professor of economics. This is obviously well-intentioned, but if the value disagreement in question is "do I have the right to exist as my self-professed identity" as opposed to "who should control the monetary supply," this immediately begins to look very silly.

This should be so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said, but given what kind of weekend it’s been on here, apparently it does: If you don’t want old rapists running the world, in office, in the board room, making decisions for all of us get comfortable with “ruining” young rapists’ lives

I am always a bit uneasy when we describe our love for someone who has passed on in past tense. The love is still there even when our loved one is no longer with us. It's just that the love has nowhere to go. That's why loss hurts so much. Love is meant to be expressed in words, in actions & indeed.

I have no words to describe the inhumanity that underpis the discourse - that asylum seekers are inherently guilty. God forbid that something happens to cause you to leave home with very little notice and seek refuge. God forbid that we tackle those happenings rather than the people it happens to.

Octopus in Yoruba is apparently "Ayéfófo" or more recently "ẹja ẹlẹsẹ mẹjọ." The latter literally means the eight-legged fish. When consumed as meat, it's called "fọ́ntọ́nfọ́ntọ́n", which I personally translate as "eww! yuck! Squishy!"

"the “celebration” of BHM in UKHE can be accurately described as a pseudo-celebration that only nods vaguely & imperceptibly at something considered nebulously to be “Black culture”. But this is not backed up by an entrenched study of African history or engagement with African-produced knowledges."

Here I argue that Black History Month (BHM) in UK higher education does little to address the racial harm facing Black students, staff, and forms of knowledge within universities. Its apathetic "celebration" reinforces the message that Black people do not fully belong within the university.

One of the things that struck me quite glaringly when I moved back to the UK nearly 20 years ago is the tendency to determine fact by public opinion. "Is it raining? Mandy from Bolton thinks it is not! Daphne from Swansea says it definitely is! Call in and tell us what you think! Is it raining?"
