And: open borders! I really appreciated @riverdonproject.bsky.social problematizing the use of "citizen" (and "science"!) in "citizen science", and noting the particular importance of resisting the state's logics in a City of Sanctuary like Sheffield.

A theme that emerged today at OpenFest was *being* open: open-minded, open to play, open to diverse outcomes and outputs. Nick's talk made me think about how this is something that research professionals have more freedom to do. Academics have to pin down research questions in advance for funders...

I love @maddipow.bsky.social 's perspective here. I'm not convinced epistemological and linguistic issues are the real barriers to realising open research: we have to tackle the socio-political - & the psychological, too! Looking forward to Maddi's keynote at OpenFest tomoz @openresshef.bsky.social

> As we have argued here, AI is deployed in women’s health in ways that reinforce sex-based stratification and (self)surveillance, both of which obscure structural causes of health disparities. [R]ather than representing a grand solution, AI stands to further depoliticize and harm women’s health.
Figure from the paper. At the top it says in red: Impoverished understandings of sex and gender in women's health research

And then it lists the following below:

Conceptualizing sex or gender in terms of binary categories, and a subsequent search for differences between groups. This limits understanding of complex distributions and overlap between categories of people, while tending to erase the experiences of transgender, non-binary, and intersex people [25,31,38];

Relying on categories (e.g., female/male, woman/man) as though categories themselves are causes or mechanisms in health and illness, rather than understanding them as proxies for potentially relevant mechanisms (e.g., specific hormone levels, body mass and tissue distribution, propensity for risk-taking behaviors, exposure to discrimination, etc.) [39-41);

Discussing the experiences of transgender, non-binary, and intersex people as exceptions to the binary rule, rather than indicative of overall human diversity [42-44];

Understanding gender as primarily an individual trait or set of traits, rather than as a social system of difference and inequality that impacts health [45,46]:

Understanding sex as a static category existing prior to, and independently from, gender-related factors, and subsequently isolating and prioritizing sex as a target of investigation, inviting overly bio-deterministic conclusions about health and illness [47-49];

Isolating gender/sex from other intersecting social systems shaping health (e.g. ethnicity and race, class, sexuality, nation), such that women's health knowledge is not generalizable to all women [50.51].

The loss of search structure is devastating for knowledge retrieval. I teach basic lit searching and it's always felt like a really core transferable skill for students to know boolean operators and "exact phrase searching" and now google, microsoft etc have just killed it to force us to use slopAI.

Do try to remember that the EHRC guidance only affects service providers and not employment, so if you work somewhere where there are toilets or changing rooms for employees that aren’t open to the public then your employers are wrong if they try to stop you from using facilities for your gender

We must also remember that IR systems collect huge amounts of personal data on users (their search queries, clicked links to websites, keystrokes and mouse-movements, etc.) and make them available to be retrieved by corporate and government actors constituting powerful mode of user surveillance. 8/

This is important because from print media to search engines, all information access media are sites of political conflict b/w liberation & oppression. These Orwellian risks aren't hypothetical; we see real examples today of state & private actors trying to manipulate our information ecosystems. 9/
Screenshot of slide titled "The politics of information access" and text "Access to information is critical to collective sense-making of our place and relationships in this world; therefore, throughout history authoritarian forces have tried to control what information is disseminated and how; and information access media have been a site of conflict between liberation and oppression".

The slide includes images of George Orwell's book "1984" alongside screenshots of:

While concerns of user surveillance and censorship are not new, generative AI's ability to produce persuasive language / visualizations + our ability to align these models = key new ingredients for building systems of mass manipulation. Also concerning: emerging risks of Digital Blackface. 10/

Have any data repositories cracked this? IIRC, one of the biosciences repositories/ seed & pollen banks reported how difficult it is to get visibility of this; exacerbated by sporadic citation/referencing/ acknowledgement practices, even when terms of use request acknowledgement of the resource.
