I hire seventy biz profs and put them in a new building with a cafe and working doors and at the same time I hire two historians and make them share an outhouse I hire a contractor to nail shut. a year later, there are more biz students than history students. Q. has the market spoken

Perversely, the scarcer positions get, the more that people who win the academic lottery insist upon their own merit and superiority, distancing themselves from the "unwashed hoards" of surplus phd holders and not realizing the isolation they're reinforcing makes them even more vulnerable

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

Laid Off After 50, and No Health Insurance? Here’s What to Consider. (Gift Article)
At best, older workers will struggle to find health insurance that bridges the years before they qualify for Medicare at age 65.

The idea that "segregated schools are an impossible problem to fix" is very much its own political position. It's not an easy problem to fix, and lots of people are invested in not fixing it, but it is fixable!

None of us can top E.B. White on this argument
“Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last--the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion.”

Trump is historically unpopular, launching an illegal war no one wants, doing everything he can to increase prices, and breaking records for corruption. Any Democrat running for office who embraces transphobic talking points is acting like a loser in a defensive crouch. Nobody likes losers.

Baseball schedule makers are the dumbest mfers in the game. How do you not have every team playing on a holiday Monday at the end of summer, right before the playoff push? They put *zero* thought into it, every year. Truly wild.

With such an absurdly captured media environment, and lots of wealthy progressives, I don’t understand why Seattle can’t seem to make a legitimate alternative media outlet work at scale. The Urbanist and Publicola are good, but a ~25-reporter center-left outlet could make a real difference.

This is who they sent out on our streets to murder us
A new career in ICE

Brouillette, 37, told his ex-wife Ashley
Brouillette late last year that he had been hired by ICE. She said that because of his long history of psychiatric issues, she thought he was having a mental health episode and she didn't believe him. She didn't realize he'd been telling the truth until this week, when videos began circulating online of the moments surrounding the shooting.

Writing headlines is hard. You have to compress an article into a phrase or two. And you have to fit an exact and usually inconvenient line space. Two images below: What the NYT is running on line. (h/t @jaywillis.net for calling this one out.) And what would fit exactly the same space, by me.
Two headlines:
As published. ( By NYT.)
Opportunities Narrow for Women as
Hegseth Blocks More Promotions

Would exactly fit the same space. (By me)
Hegseth Narrows Opportunities for
Women, Blocking More Promotions
