Two Assistant Professor Positions in Evolutionary Biology and Mechanistic Processes

Description
The Department of Integrative Biology at The University of Texas at Austin seeks to fill two faculty positions in the areas of Evolutionary Biology and Mechanistic Processes, broadly defined. We are looking for candidates who are advancing (1) evolutionary biology or (2) the mechanistic understanding of organismal processes. These positions will be filled at the level of Assistant Professor.

Qualifications
Candidates should be using innovative approaches in evolutionary biology and/or the mechanistic understanding of whole-organism processes. Mechanistic processes include, but are not limited to, behavior, biomechanics, cognition, physiology, and development. The phylogenetic scope of the Evolutionary Biology position may include eukaryotes, prokaryotes, viruses, and the scale may include individual molecules to entire ecosystems and beyond. Candidates for either position may employ experimental, theoretical, or computational frameworks, or a combination thereof. Special consideration will be given to applicants with demonstrated potential for integrating across our target disciplines.

We seek applicants with a strong record of high-quality research, publications, potential for extramural funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship. A PhD or equivalent is required at the time of appointment, and postdoctoral research experience is strongly recommended.

New email to Director Bhattacharya to start Labor Day weekend regarding the secret transfer of appropriated funds to the Department of Defense.
Dear Director Bhattacharya:

Nothing screams "radical transparency" like quietly signing an agreement with another agency transferring hundreds of millions of dollars appropriated to NIH that is only publicly disclosed through investigative reporting and only confirmed by a vague statement by you on "X".

As you know, I have been tracking NIH commitments in as close to real time as possible. I am flattered that NIH has mimicked my "funding curves" on the front page of the NIH Reporter website. Apparently, I will need to consider essentially secret interagency transfers in my analysis.

This is another good contribution to your legacy at NIH..."Director Bhattacharya broke new ground and many other things."

Sincerely,

Right. Vought and Bhattacharya tried to gut NIH in 2025 via stopping spending (Fed Reg bans) and rescission. That failed. Now in 2026, they’re still using bureaucracy inside the agency to try to slow spending. But they need a new way to get the leftover money (meant for science!) out of NIH. 1/

How long does DNA damage last? @aaronquinlan.bsky.social and I found evidence that lesions are transmitted from parent (P0) to offspring (F1) in C. elegans. If they segregate unrepaired for multiple cell divisions, lesions generate multi-allelism in the F1 germline. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
biorxiv.org
Inherited DNA damage generates multi-allelic mutations in C. elegans
Exogenous and endogenous mutagens generate a wide variety of DNA lesions, including bulky adducts, chemical modifications, and single- or double-stranded breaks. A phenomenon called “lesion segregation,” in which lesions evade repair and persist for multiple cell divisions, has recently been documented in tumors and healthy somatic tissues from mice and humans, respectively. Persistent lesions can generate multi-allelic variants (MAVs) by serving as templates for multiple rounds of error-prone replication. By reanalyzing data from a large C. elegans mutagenesis experiment, we observed robust evidence for MAVs at a small fraction (∼0.2%) of mutated sites in the offspring of strains treated with alkylating agents. Because these sequencing data were derived from the progeny of a single F1 animal — itself the offspring of a mutagenized P0 — all mutations should be biallelic. The presence of multi-allelic variation implies that some DNA lesions are transmitted to the F1 zygote, evade repair, and are repeatedly bypassed by error-prone polymerases during embryogenesis. We suspect that many more lesions are inherited than is suggested by MAV prevalence, and that a large fraction of biallelic mutations are also caused by inherited lesions. Our results demonstrate that DNA lesions serve as durable, transgenerational templates for mutagenesis in C. elegans . We speculate that lesion segregation in the early embryo may be a source of mosaicism and genetic diversity in humans, as well. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. Comment on NSF-2026-OTR-0001 by Joshua S. Weitz
I am a quantitative biologist whose research focuses on how virus infections transform human and environmental health. I am a prior recipient of a NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship, have led and co-led multiple NSF grants as academic faculty, and have served as an ad hoc reviewer and on multiple review panels for NSF. I am also the co-founder of the Science and Community Impacts Mapping Project (SCIMaP) whose mission is to assess how changes to federal science funding impact research, health, jobs, and economic activity across the United States. I am writing in my personal capacity to recommend that the proposed repackaging of the National Science Foundation ‘Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide’ (PAPPG) into a newly constituted ‘Guidance on Financial Assistance’ (GFA) should be withdrawn in full.
