Good end-of-FY coverage by the Times. The amount of unspent funds has wiggled but it was pretty clear for some time now that NSF was simply not going to spend a substantial portion of its congressional appropriation this year.

What did NIH spend its budget on this fiscal year, and how has that changed due to Trump administration priorities? @aniloza.bsky.social, @jaspar.bsky.social, and I teamed up for @statnews.com to look at the agency's grants data. Here's what we learned 👇 www.statnews.com/2026/10/02/n...

The NIH continued reducing grants involving health disparities, race, and ethnicity but made little progress toward other administration priorities in the 2026 fiscal year.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

NIH Director Bhattacharya has proposed to 'disestablish' NIAID's 20-year old Division of Clinical Research, with a comment period that expires on Friday September 18. www.niaid.nih.gov/about/niaid-...
Public Hearing of NIAID Proposed Reorganization
Background
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), conducts and supports biomedical research to better understand, treat, and prevent infectious and immune-mediated diseases. NIAID research spans basic, clinical, and translational science and supports efforts to address infectious, allergic, and immunologic diseases and emerging health challenges.

The Division of Clinical Research (DCR), established in 2006, supports and coordinates NIAID clinical research involving human volunteers. Its activities have included clinical research operations and oversight, biostatistics, regulatory and policy support, international clinical research partnerships, and specialized research capabilities, including work associated with the Integrated Research Facility at Fort Detrick (IRF-Frederick).

NIAID proposes to disestablish DCR and realign its projects, programs, partnerships, and functions across the NIAID Office of the Director (OD), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), and Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID). The proposed changes are intended to better align with Presidential priorities and to reflect the Institute's updated vision and revised mission focus and to ensure accountability, transparency and standardized scientific review of research projects.
