these are processing tomatoes (canning, sauce etc) which are hard as rocks when ripe. machine harvested, loaded, and off to the production plant. tomatoes for fresh market are handled a bit differently. they often are harvested green and ethylene ripened

That used to happen in Salinas a lot too I don’t know if it still does cause I haven’t been driving down there regularly. it’s funny to an outside observer, but it’s tragic for the truck driver and owner of tomatoes. Lots of lost money, but they can’t put them back on the truck and sell them so…

We were driving over the I80 Sac-Davis causeway a few weeks ago when just in front a tomato truck's lower doors malfunctioned and thousands of tomatoes flooded the road. Luckily everyone was driving slowly but we did make gazpacho.

Genome Observatory now has a Genometrics section, where I've collated some stats about the 18k NCBI Chromosome-level genome records. Interestingly many genomes have no mitogenome, and most plant genomes have no plastid genome. Any and all suggestions for additions to Genometrics are welcomed!
