For Ukraine, against nazis, antisemitism, genocide, and zionism. Have forgotten more about chemistry than most people will ever know. Seriously, I *really* don't know very much chemistry, but I have a PhD in it, and forgot all of it 🤷

Animals that look like they’re about to drop an album: #Timeline #Cleanser
A Llama, a sheep, a chicken, a bull and a goat, looking very stylish, in a autumn field:-)Five very tough looking pigeons, looking directly at camera, definitely a hard core group:-)Five(ish) Scottish highland cattle, aka Fluffy cows, on snowy hill, looking so sweet I got diabetes from this album coverThree black and white puppies, might be Siberian huskies, I really don’t know, but their death metal album probably is as tough as them:-)

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.

For generations, the American empire was the most powerful force on earth, and so we tended to assume that it was the most *durable* force on earth - surely anything so powerful *must* also be *eternal*? 1/
A detail from Dore's engraving depicting the drowning of the Leviathan - a great sea-serpent thrashing in a chaotic dark sea. The image has been altered: it has been hand-tinted. The sea serpent is wearing a MAGA hat. Drowning nearby are a beleagured Uncle Sam, an Android robot, and the Statue of Liberty.

1/ Why is atmospheric CO₂ accelerating faster than fossil fuel emissions are growing? The answer is buried in the data, and it's more worrying than most people realise. A thread. 🧵👇
Line chart showing atmospheric CO₂ concentration at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1958 to 2024. A light blue sawtooth line shows raw monthly values, reflecting the seasonal cycle of plant growth. A dark blue smooth line shows the seasonally adjusted record, rising from 315 ppm in 1958 to over 426 ppm in 2024.

A dashed red curve shows the super-exponential fit, with the instantaneous growth rate rising from 0.27%/yr in 1960 to 0.64%/yr in 2024, more than doubling over the period of the record.
