For Ukraine, against nazis, antisemitism, genocide, and zionism. Have forgotten more about chemistry than most people will ever know. Seriously, I *really* don't know very much chemistry, but I have a PhD in it, and forgot all of it 🤷

Tech companies suddenly decide they can, in fact, moderate content on their platforms after all

It's a lot better than the star wars episode 2 Droid foundry scene. The stakes are more real in this one

Wait, how sure are we that teslas didn't become conscious and realised that a lot lot of Tesla drivers are horrible people, and the world would be better off without them? Maybe FSD isn't just buggy?

Also, if you could stop control your software if you or your boss wanted to, it's still not the machine god, you are are just LARPing Yudkowsky sci fi.

As a long-time technologist who has built many software products: If your software does something you can’t control, you are a shitty software engineer. You have not birthed an alien intelligence.

Yeah, sorry about that. At first, I also thought it was just about Rationalists shedding religious morality, and getting freaky 'cause they felt like getting freaky... But yeah, I think it's just cult shit.

I don't think it has anything to do with anything except male pleasure and internal cult power wrangling. It's a way to: 1. Attract weird celibate nerds to the cult (social media posts) 2. Align ideology (that's why they were able to filter applicants based on email)

James Cameron is clearly a much better sci-fi writer than Eliezer Yudkowsky, but Yudkowsky AI sci fi writing has the ability to make the reader feel like a very special and smart boy, and in the end that sort of glazing obviates the need to have good ideas or write good sci fi.

Or, as we say in the more normal other parts of the software industry "you're not going to _believe_ how fucking buggy our software is 🤯".

I am, apart from not living in California, the target demographic for getting sucked into that cult. I even read HPMOR as it was being written. Sometimes I lie awake and think how close I came to being a super weird nerd, or - god forbid - a statistic in a cursed Sankey diagram.

Animals that look like they’re about to drop an album: #Timeline #Cleanser
A Llama, a sheep, a chicken, a bull and a goat, looking very stylish, in a autumn field:-)Five very tough looking pigeons, looking directly at camera, definitely a hard core group:-)Five(ish) Scottish highland cattle, aka Fluffy cows, on snowy hill, looking so sweet I got diabetes from this album coverThree black and white puppies, might be Siberian huskies, I really don’t know, but their death metal album probably is as tough as them:-)

You don't take a gamble like that if you think the status quo has a chance of winning the war. The fact that there is no way of winning on the current trajectory is something it takes time to come to terms with.

Isn't it just that attacking nato is a huge gamble? There's a chance that he succeeds in scaring the Europeans into stopping their support of Ukraine, winning the war. There's also a chance that it has the opposite effect, causing a decisive defeat of Russia, and ending his regime.

By a pretty wide margin. The last freed slave, Peter Mills, died in 1972. Isn't the first London Underground trains actually old enough that slave owners could have used it while they still owned slaves back in America?

This is a PC. If they subsidised it, companies that needed desktop computers would buy this and install windows on it, and the subsidy would be money down the drain.

Valve has released a tiny, silent, entry level PC that does important work bringing PCs gaming to the living room and desktop Linux to the masses. The timing could not be worse.

Nah, that nation founded on sin. Their founding principle was "slavery is good actually". They've tried to dodge that ever since but never completely succeeded. The gluttony is a side effect of being blessed with amazing geography, which is the reason we have to care about them.

I think people dislike HR because of the inherent dishonesty of the function. They pretend to be there to help you, but when it comes down to brass tacks, HR is not there to help you with your sex pest abusive boss, they are there to make sure *you* go away and don't hurt the company in the process.

That's a good idea. The democratic countries also need a pact that once certain tripwires for eg freedom of courts, etc. Trade and international relations are just cut off. Needs to be immediate consequences.
