I think I became a Critical University Studies scholar when I drove 75 miles to a town I’d never heard of to buy a whole pig with cash, but received an employee discount because I was, just like the seller, instructional faculty at the University of California.

Check your stats! I did two days of claude via copilot last month and that was right at the break even point for the $10/month tier. Means that I’ve definitely had months with 5-10x subsidy

I think there's a certain amount of is/ought going on here. Is this what the purpose of university *should* be? No. Is it what it is in practice? Yes, mostly! To some degree we should be grateful that the liberal benefits of university *are still packaged* with that certification process.

One of the most clarifying passages I've ever read on what "polarization" actually means in the U.S."
Excerpt from the book How Democracies Die.

"America's democratic norms, then, were born in a context of exclusion. As long as the political community was restricted largely to whites, Democrats and Republicans had much in common. Neither party was likely to view the other as an existential threat. The process of racial inclusion that began after World War II and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act would, at long last, fully democratization the United States. But it would also polarized it, posing the greatest challenge to established forms of mutual tolerating and forbearance since Reconstruction."

It's a little jarring to see the "Appeal to Heaven" flag on the stage. That flag has been adopted as a symbol by far-right extremist and "patriot" groups. It was also carried by the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol as part of the attempted insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.
