I certainly hope journalists speak up about their colleagues being arrested but I have to say, 2+ years of journalists being silent about their Palestinian colleagues being murdered does not instill confidence in me

The largest infrastructure projects currently being built in the US appear to be data centers and detention centers. The AI boom has coincided with ICE becoming the most heavily funded government agency. It's hard not to see a connection: This is the architectures of digital fascism

Okay so I was actually at this encounter, filmed the aftermath, and am briefly visible in this video, and I would point out that what he does here is briefly kick a car twice. ICE beats him up, shoots pepper balls into the crowd, and launches tear gas at everyone else before leaving.

newrepublic.com/article/2057... any proposal that doesn’t acknowledge and grapple with this reality is unserious; it’s self-soothing, an attempt to deflect unwanted attention and pointed criticisms.
screenshot of article text, beginning with answers to questions about the feasibility of any actual ICE/CBP deescalation in communities they’re currently besieging:

“The answers to those questions sure look like "no," "no," and "no." To wit, The Wall Street Journal reports that some Trump aides have realized that all this has become a "political liability," so they're in discussions over "how to continue deportations without clashing with protesters." They're also planning new steps to "improve ICE's image."

Yes - until you see it firsthand, it’s hard to understand how upsetting and enraging it is to see these guys operate in your community. They are dressed for war, they beat civilians up, they openly antagonize neighbors, they’re masked, they carry people away. Everyone is livid at every scene.

I thought to myself, why would anyone in higher offer to run secret police academies to train secret police to secret police better, and then … whelp the author already runs a police academy
quote about Lane Glenn, author of the IHE article: A highly collaborative, energetic leader, Dr. Glenn encourages experimentation and organizational innovation. Recently, NECC became the first college in the country to offer a competency-based associate degree in Early Childhood Education, and its police academy, one of the largest in the state, was the first to be accepted into the National Active Bystander for Law Enforcement (ABLE) Training Program, designed to prepare police officers to successfully intervene to prevent harm and to create a law enforcement culture that supports peer intervention, leading to safer communities

This horrific epistemological practice has both proven almost impossible to dislodge, even as it’s resulted in press being utterly humiliated by liars again and again. It has also arguably led to the collapse of liberal democracy and the rise of fascism. It seems like they should stop doing it!

The political press very clearly understands “truth” as a social agreement, a compromise position between everyone important enough to have an opinion. It did not reflect on how this would allow dedicated liars to go all-in on lies again and again and dramatically shift the position.

Again, I know it’s persnickety, but I want to emphasize that Alex Pretti was not “showing up at a protest,” he was driving around the city as part of a community-led first responder network. He was likely carrying a gun the same reason anyone does: he felt like he might encounter an unsafe situation
