Actually the biggest lesson from the Schmitt debacle is that Republicans have so internalized and learned to justify Trump’s corruption and disdain for ethics, they assume everyone is corrupt and stupid. They cannot imagine an honest public servant.

A couple quick observations here, which should be obvious. 1) insurance “risk pools” work by requiring younger/healthier people who make few or no claims to sign up and pay premiums alongside older/less healthy people who do, essentially covering their costs.

How do computers calculate complicated trig functions such as tangent? I took a look at Intel's 8087 floating-point chip under the microscope to find out. The chip combines two techniques to evaluate the tan function quickly and accurately: polynomials and an algorithm called CORDIC...
A die photo of the 8087 chip under a microscope shows complex patterns from its transistors and wiring. The middle of the chip holds the microcode ROM, while the bottom half of the chip is the datapath that performs calculations. Zooming in on the datapath shows various functional blocks, which appear as rectangles with different textures. Important functional blocks are labeled: exponent ROM, constant ROM, shifter, adder, registers, and so forth.

This is worse than a crime, it’s a mistake. Trump/Witkoff/Kushner still think this war is about a piece of territory. Putin would simply pocket the territorial gain & move on to using the negotiations to push his ultimate aim of controlling Ukraine.

Interior structure models of Earth, Venus, Mercury, Mars, the Moon, and Io, all shown to scale and key elements labelled.

It was not a glacier collapse. It was a very large bedrock landslide failure that dragged a piece of glacier with it. Not at all the same thing. Unfortunately the media and Blueskiers have caught the phrase “glacial/glacier collapse” and keep repeating it despite our efforts to correct them.

Milo Yiannopoulos: "I didn't really understand the physical reality of how institutionalized the brutality is in America. The manner in which they arrest you, they put you in manacles, everybody is arrested like an MS 13 gang member.
It was physically degrading. It was frightening. I don't think I've ever been frightened like that before. I was weeping like an old woman for an hour. I wouldn't wish it on anyone."

The Circumstellar Disc around Beta Pictoris - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/cb9fPh
See my main Beta Pictoris page for full details about this project: www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com/Astrophotography/Beta-P...

This image shows the famous circumstellar disc of debris and dust orbiting the star Beta Pictoris 63.4 light years away. This is a very young system thought to be only around 12 million years old and is essentially similar to how our own Solar System must have formed some 4.5 billion years ago. The disc is seen edge-on from our perspective and appears in professional images as thin wedges or lines protruding radially from the central star in opposite directions.
For the last couple of years I have been wondering if it was possible for amateurs to capture this special target but have never come across any such images. The main difficulty is the overwhelming glare from Beta Pictoris itself which completely drowns out the dust disc that is circling very close to the star. Images of the disc taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, and from big observatories, are usually made by physically blocking out the glare of Beta Pictoris itself within the optical path.
But I then found this excellent 1993 paper 'Observation of the central part of the beta Pictoris disk with an anti-blooming CCD' (Lecavelier des etangs, A., Perrin, G., Ferlet, R., Vidal-Madjar, A., Colas, F., et al., 1993, A&A, 274, 877)

🌟 OPEN ACCESS 🌟 In 2026, a Blue Origin New Glenn vehicle exploded during a static-fire test at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Scientists used infrasound data to determine the yield. #TSR ⚒️ buff.ly/6DsoAwW
This map focused on the southeastern US shows regional infrasound station coverage and detections for the Blue Origin New Glenn static‐fire explosion. The blue star marks the source location at Launch Complex 36, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Green triangles indicate stations with accepted infrasound detections associated with the event, whereas gray triangles indicate stations with retrieved waveforms but no accepted event signal. Dashed range rings show source–receiver distances of 500, 1,000, and 1,500 kilometers. The inset map shows the regional network geometry relative to North America and the western Atlantic. The location of the International Monitoring System station, on the island if Bermuda, is shown.

I have been working on NGC 2392 (Lion Nebula) bit by bit over the past couple of weeks. Pretty happy with it! As always, high quality image and perhaps overly verbose information is available at my Flickr gallery: flic.kr/p/2swHfCQ
A heavenly view of one of our friendly neighborhood planetary nebulas, the Lion Nebula. It's circular in appearance with cometary knots streaming outward from the center, making up the "hair" of the lion's mane. The lion's face is a brightly outlined inner shell that kinda looks like a spaghetti nest with a bright star nestled in the center. Numerous background galaxies are sprinkled around the image, along with a handful of stars. The lion has a blueish mane and a pinkish face with a deep, dark cyan center. The background galaxies are subtly colored with yellows, oranges, and reds. The few stars are more or less white.

Displacements have red tones for east and blue tones for west, with white in middle near-zero over fault rupture. Fault ruptured far to east under ocean. #venezuela
Map of north-central Venezuela with NISAR line-of-sight displacement map shown in false color varying from red to white to blue. Red land moved east (towards satellite) and blue land moved west. InSAR only measures land, so ocean and lakes have no measurements. Background map from Google satellite natural-color images on land and bathymetry in ocean.
