I sometimes get the impression that the insider assumption is or maybe only was that all the primary historical work has been done and now we'll just critique or deepen or refine it rather than that there are huge gaps.

Sometimes academic training seems like training in what to see but also what not to see/notice/address, in that a lot of important histories are not being produced from within the academy.

My writing has turned out to involve a lot of historical sleuthing, but I’ve always tried to underline that “I’m not a real historian”—that is, untrained. I’ve emphasized that I’m merely “approaching from a historical perspective” or “surprised to find myself a sort of de facto historian”

I didn’t really understand my Dad’s version of happiness & success when I was younger. You grow up in a world defined by MORE, ambitions & career paths & ownership & status & wealth. You’re told working minimarts & renting = failure. I came to realize he was the most successful person I knew.

I’m a lot less successful than I used to be, and a lot happier. Life isn’t rehearsal, or prep for something bigger—it’s the actual show

I can’t even ride a horse, but I spent a decade in my youth herding sheep on foot in the wilderness of northern BC. It was very hard, lonely, dirty, uncomfortable, often dangerous work. We hired men and women roughly equally. We wound up with a majority of very tough women, many gay—by attrition

My personal (Canadian) feeling is that the US is too militarized, culturally, practically, and economically. “The most powerful military on Earth” was never super comfortable for anyone else & much less if the US starts going rogue. But wow is this crazed administration ever damaging the institution

It’s worth noting as well that pop artists like Warhol and Lichtenstein were working in a time before Rogers v Koons. Always remember, “fair use” is a legal defense one may attempt to argue—not a guaranteed right! If a court says no, then it’s not fair use

Tough thing about responding to this kind of hate display is they’re partly publicity stunt flash mobs to generate attention for their twisted cause. Heads they win, tails we lose. Ultimately we need to get to a place where racists and fascists are reluctant to risk public displays and disruptions

Residential school denialism is very stupid. Even without the abuse, neglect, and dangerous conditions (documented and reported at the time!) infectious disease and accidents etc took a lot of lives, even among white school children in dramatically better and safer institutions

Many years ago as an art student I found myself in a (friendly enough) email exchange with Archie’s legal rep over some pop art paintings I was making. (I reached out to them.) At that time they were *very* concerned with maintaining the squeaky clean image of their IP. They got way bolder later on

Seeing replies here and elsewhere saying the sea turtles in California are a bad sign, and it is and it isn’t. Yes, it’s a sign that climate change is affecting species and ecosystems (bad). But it’s also a sign that species are shifting their ranges to track areas of climatic suitability (good).

New animal discoveries are not bolstering cryptozoology. As scientific as it may feel, it is not a sound argument to say that a new discovery is a good sign for finding cryptids.

My strategy with my kids has always been to talk to them and maintain high trust in their good judgement (ramping up autonomy with age). What’s the alternative? You want them to hopefully accept some guidance, and volunteer some information when they need help. Otherwise they’ll just go around you!

This is a good reminder. It’s also quite difficult! Even the linked story uses phrases like “wrote a message to remind itself” and “deceitful behavior” that seem to imply awareness or intent. It’s just tricky to talk about. Like, mimicry in insects deceives, but does the individual intend deception?
