It's baffling to me because, to me, the absolute best part of becoming very very rich would be never having to care what anyone else thinks of you ever again! But the social instinct to Impress The Older Boys is very strong in the former-nerd rich kid demographic our billionaire class is drawn from

You know what type of people a $5 million "Gold Card" for US citizenship will attract? Successful criminals and state-sponsored spies. Well done, Donald, after years of accusing Democrats of using immigration to bring unsavory people to the US, you prove that you were, once again, just projecting.

NEW: Google used to warn you when you were seeing low-quality search results. Then, in the weeks leading up to the 2024 election, the company quietly turned that warning off www.platformer.news/google-data-...
The researchers collected their first data in October 2023 and March 2024. Initially, they were struck by how inconsistently Google showed its warnings. A deep learning model they built to analyze the queries suggested that the warnings should have appeared between 29 and 58 times as often as they did in practice. For motivated conspiracy peddlers, they were easy to evade: just adding quotation marks or a single letter to a query was typically enough to make the banner disappear.

The researchers were beginning to collect additional data last September when they discovered something unexpected: Google had stopped showing low-quality banners entirely, weeks before early voting began, without disclosing it.

I wrote a bit about this yesterday for Wonkette, because it's driving me nuts. If there's so much gov't fraud - not just Medicaid, but everywhere - it should be trivially easy to give examples. Instead they just keep repeating this as if saying it will make it true. bsky.app/profile/kevi...

When Musk’s role in govt or in FAA oversight was under consideration, perhaps it was fair to say “raising concerns about conflicts.” When he announced SpaceX would redesign the ATC system, that was at least a clear conflict. Now they’re buying SpaceX products to do it, it is just plain corruption.

natevince Heartbroken and Confused! I was terminated on Valentines Day from my dream job.
48 weeks ago I started my permanent NPS position as Yosemite's new Locksmith. y I apprenticed under the previous locksmith the 4 years before his retirement. He had a wonderful carrier of 23 years with NPS. He said, "This is a good job Nate, the park can't run without a locksmith, do your job well and your'll always have job."
Well now 3 weeks short of my probationary period l've been fired. I've had exemplary performance and am essential for park operations.
The people that fired me don't know who I am, or what I do.
They simply don't understand this park and how big and complex it is.I need to immediately move out of housing, I have lost my career and I have NO PLAN. This was my dream! All of my eggs were in this basket and I planned to stay till retirement. I had an appointment to meet a realtor today, but canceled, everything has been flipped upside down. I'm scared I?????????????????????!!!!!!??????????????????] I was terminated at 1:15pm 2/14/2025 via email.
Yosemite National Park the size of Rhode Island and has more locks than a small city, and without a locksmith I'm deeply concerned for the safety and security of the park and people in it. This is not right!

The language, as described, is superfluous. It is already constitutional and federal statutory law that the administration must spend the money that Congress appropriates. Congress’s power of the purse fundamental to our system of government. And yet, it’s a red line for Republicans to include it.

I'm convinced this is a genuine problem. The reality of Trump is so cartoonishly, comically awful that an absolutely neutral description sounds like a hit piece, even to me. So if you're at all predisposed to think of press as biased, factual reporting looks like some relentless vendetta.

I'd wager a nontrivial cause of declining trust in press is precisely that people are accustomed to an era of politics where objective coverage generally sounded somewhat even-handed. And suddenly one party is constantly talked about like inept comic book supervillains.

And this is, of course, because one party has been taken over by a buffoonish comic book supervillain. But because this seems incredible to people—surely the American public wouldn't elect someone THAT terrible—they instead decide press are getting more biased.

Bears repeating that social security is incredibly INCREDIBLY efficient to run. Its overhead costs are basically zero when you consider the size of the undertaking and the genuine benefits delivered.
