We tried the ownership society where everyone is a little capitalist because they own their home, and that will provide their nest egg. It’s led to record homelessness and profound dissatisfaction with life in the US.

In a series of private meetings, the company consulted religious scholars to help instill morality into its A.I. models — and make the case that Claude could be conscious.

I keep thinking about this and Nikole Hannah-Jones' pieces and how all the pain and devil's bargains with modern K-12 schooling is all in service of sending kids to places like this. At every "elite" high school, this is the goal. For fucking what?

What if schools were places students wanted to be? What if every young person could count on feeling safe, being known, and sharing a sense of connection at school? What if students knew that, in addition to their “core” academic work, there would be time every day for art, music, and play? 6/n

my favorite semi-recent sci-fi novel, Void Star by Zachary Mason, takes the idea that big tech wants to rule over e-favelas somewhat literally and it is so sobering and wild. I highly recommend! I might even re-read it this month

i think RFK Jr.'s colon-destroying steak and sauerkraut diet, tradwife culture, and Silicon Valley CNC parties are the same thing: a desperate attempt among powerful men to convince each other that gluttony, rapaciousness, and raw domination are not just their birthright but their responsibility

I can promise you that the teachers who didn't give the daughter in question a good education in algebra were busy teaching 13-year-olds to add and subtract. It's sad! But that is what actually happens at schools where kids are living in deprivation

Still thinking about Nikole Hannah-Jones, but I guess part of the answer here is class consciousness? People who believe deeply in a better world need to figure out a better way of striving for a good working-class life for themselves and their children.

The Harvard "Why would they make me read???" anecdote really hit for me because those are the values of people who are sending their kids to Harvard now! They are opposed to the concept of the Autotelic Self! That's the pipeline these kids traveled through. I know because I traveled through it too.

I was talking with my mom about this idea and she said something HILARIOUS. "We didn't realize that it wasn't a promise, it was a threat. We'll make public schooling so unpleasant via testing that people will legitimately stop having children. No child left behind because no one wants them anymore."

One reason why the National Book Awards didn’t have a lot of nonwhite nominees in the mid century was because immigration law kept out most nonwhite people until 1965, and Black people were under segregation. What we see now is at least partly the result of greater competition.

McLuhan said that technologies involve augmentations and amputations. The problem is that you can't really wish the effects of the amputation away and one major effect that we have seen over the last few decades is anti-system rage due to the inability to understand one's role in it

I spent my early years in a school system that had to invest 10s of millions of dollars in the 2000s to get up to a 75% graduation rate. There were quite literally not enough classrooms to house more than 50% of the freshmen who began high school every year

Still thinking about this story, sorry, but I think part of the problem is that even reporters don't really know how depressing things are at schools where the kids are really struggling. The Title I school I taught at wasn't even the worst and we still had to take a day or 2 to process gun deaths

I'm sure this will ultimately prove too insane for most, but, admittedly, it gets that there is a vast demographic of parents who BOTH intuitively despise and resent teachers as a class AND have no interest in or inclination to actively help their children learn or develop good study habits at home.

Like, if when someone says "language influences and even creates thought" what you turn that into is, rather, them saying "language creates the capacity for thinking," a LOT of misunderstandings are going to happen, whether you agree or disagree with that assertion you turned their statement into.

Steinem wasn't the head of feminist activism or a (deliberate) long term spook, she was a midcentury magazine editor. I cannot express how much that is the determining factor of her life and career, in the same way that it is for her closest comparison points like Wintour and Wenner and (yes) Hefner
