The psychology of doomerism is that the Doomer is the smartest boy in class because he can see the Real Problem, which obviously negates the primacy of Other Problems. For totally mysterious reasons, the Real Problem is never poverty or discrimination.

Although hundreds of viral transcriptional regulators (vTRs) have been identified, we know little about the host pathways they rewire to promote replication and persistence or their mechanisms of action. In our new paper, we addressed this gap across human viruses. 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The problem, as with so many things, is Trump. I'm gonna do a little thread on this because people don't seem to be aware. 1/x

Well put by @mmasnick.bsky.social. www.techdirt.com/2025/06/20/c...
The “bubble” framing also fundamentally misunderstands what most people want from social media. When you go to a knitting circle, are you disappointed that most people there want to talk about knitting? When you join a book club, do you complain that everyone seems interested in books? Pundits and politicians may want to broadcast to the largest possible audience, but most people are looking for community, not maximum reach.

Most people aren’t looking for a debating arena. They want to talk with people they like about topics they care about—whether that’s knitting, local politics, or professional interests.

This becomes impossible when the platform owner has hung out a shingle for Nazis, and your attempts to discuss your hobbies get drowned out by fascist propaganda algorithmically pushed into your timeline. That’s not “diverse discourse”—it’s just a bad user experience.

The latest wave of COVID revisionism is a transparent attack on the idea of expertise itself. It is not 'hubris' for public health professionals to issue guidance during public health emergencies!
A fundamental error of Covid policy was to accord too much power to public health experts with a predictably narrow set of professional concerns and expertise, as well as perspectives shaped by comfortable, upper-middle-class material conditions. Slogans like “follow the science” turned complex practical and moral choices among policy alternatives into simplistic attempts to predict effects on a narrow range of outcomes. Public deliberation was severely hampered by the unwillingness of many political leaders, journalists, and academics to ask and demand answers to hard questions involving difficult trade-offs.The problem of elites hubristically deciding that they know better than everyone else is as old as democracy. As Josiah Ober, a scholar of democracy, puts it, “Officials infantilize citizens when they deny them access to relevant information, or present them with false information, e.g., when obscuring the risks inherent in a given course of private investment or public policy.”

I think that a major driver of adherents to the COVID19 lab leak theory is that they cannot handle the simple truth that we are not in control of pandemics. The idea that novel pathogens emerge naturally is too frightening for them to handle. Yet that is how pandemics have begun throughout history.
