The only reason the medieval period is being encroached on by early modernists is cos 17th centurists are being displaced by the ongoing attempts of long 18th centurists to make the c18th even longer. Mark my words, we will make the c18th so unbelievably long that the antiquers will soon fear us.

Poggio Bracciolini, famous for rediscovering Lucretius as he trekked across the Alps hunting for manuscripts while unemployed (his papal boss got de-poped) copied so many major manuscripts that his hand basically is what our era uses as standard newspaper script, as easy on the eye as it gets 3/?
Handwriting of Poggio Bracciolini. Beautifully crisp but flowing vertical rounded little letters, with very distinct shapes and easily differentiable tall and descending letters (y, p, b, g etc.) While a few of the Latin abbreviations and the f-shaped long-s may slow down the unfamiliar a bit, it isn't hard to make out the letters, and most modern people can easily read most of the words.Detail from a 1524 German manuscript. Despite being a century closer to us in time, the letters are much harder to make out, with the Ds curving backwards, the ls short, the shapes of the s and r tricky, the Vs closed so they look almost like As, and many other details farther from modern typefaces which make it hard to read despite being, for the kind of manuscript it is, very clear.
