The Joyce Carol Oates thing everybody hates is just amazing posting because it is a fairly run of the mill AI take (there is writing that is routine communication that can probably be automated) and then she slaps a nuclear hot "what is real literature" take in there.

There are two academic disciplines, computer science and sociology. Biology? Computer science. Physics? Computer science. Economics? Computer science. Computer Science? Actually, Sociology.

God it's so funny to be doing this bit when we're in an active war that he was personally integral to us starting. He's doing the "hold me back! Hold me back!" routine on levels previous chickenhawk cowards never even imagined.

I think it's kinda fascinating that the world's biggest MOVIE STAR and probably the most bankable actor in Hollywood is not a particularly good actor. Tom Cruise is an extremely talented performer and a real contender for hardest working man in show-business but whenever the draw is his acting...

what i think is currently up in the AI space since we're having cost arguments again: selling inference is very profitable, but models are improving so fast that there's no time for capex on model training to amortize, so net at this rate they're losing money which is why they want a cartel

A very common and sort of funny combination of beliefs on here is that reactionary corporations exercise iron control over the media and also that this is irrelevant to Democrats attempting to put out progressive messaging

I have been promised that the undercurrent of sorta hating women in Dungeon Crawler Carl goes away at some point and staring down another 500 pages or so of Book 5...does that happen soon?

There are many things going badly in the world but I think the "omnicrisis" is pretty clearly a result of people having access to more information on the state of the world than has ever been possible in human history. Like if the average person in 1400 knew everything going on in the world then...

One thing going on here is that professional writers have actual legit beef with LLMs and they (and arguably artists) are justified in seeing these products as irredeemably tainted by plagiarism. Unfortunately, that is an extremely vulnerable epistemological position to be in.

One funny thing about how AI alignment is going is that so much of the early work was obsessed with consequentialist ethics, maybe occasionally throwing in some deontology for spice, but so far what seems to work best is "tell Claude to be a person of virtue"

I think Kai Winn is probably my favorite Trek villain with Dukat a close second. Both such good depictions of people struggling to reconcile their self-perception with a complete refusal to stop being a complete piece of shit every goddamn minute of every day.

prominent text: welcome to the third dimension
underneath: an image of a kinda george lucas-lookin' mf (wearing a black cape), using a very small space shuttle on a space table to co-ordinate the 3d image on his apple II screen in wire frame. he is looking back at you intensely (away from what he is doing), giving the whole image a twilight zone vibe.

Force Awakens doesn't have one, TLJ attempts to create one, Rise of Skywalker doesn't have one either but is very adamant that the one from Last Jedi doesn't count. Overall effect is three movies that are about how we're never going to stop making Star Wars movies.

when i was 4 or 5, my mom was a prof at a college and she used to hand me the scantron sheet before she wrote the exam and let me colour whatever lettered bubble i wanted for each answer. if i coloured two by accident, she made an 'all of the above' option. one time she gave me it and i coloured the 'a' bubble for each of the 130 questions except for the second last one and she just went with it
later on, she told me that it was the most entertaining exam she had ever watched her students take
