We didn't kill him. He fell sometimes people die of a fall-it's known-we are accustomed to blame but we are not to blame. Perhaps he was dead al-ready. We don't know. It's not our fault. We can't tell.

It is true that we embraced him as he sank, and we pulled on his soft rich clothing, yes, that's true. We pulled him-not down! toward!-in a direction toward the center of things, you know the one. Deep inside. People have this silly idea about directions, the way to cut up the world, north south east west up down. They forget away and toward (the center).

You cannot cut water; we think he still tried. The scabbard on his belt was empty. His hand clutched a knife. He sank slowly toward the center.

How we held him! Like a lover, entered him, tenderly, sweetly, in si-lence, not wishing to be too forward (not a direction). His juices meeting our juices. Blood of the city: rainwater and pisswater and the oozings of trash, of-fal on Butcher Street

There are many things in this world I do not know nearly well enough to offer what would be a presumptuous opinion. On #Ireland, the #OrangeOrder, and #GarvaghyRoad, I did come across this comment on Insta that I'd like to offer instead. Peace is fragile. This is how we hold on.

kev_buchanan writes on Instagram in response to a news item:

I understand tradition. I understand freedom. And I understand the principle of having the right to walk peacefully on a public road.

But surely rights also come with responsibility, judgement and an understanding of history.

For almost 30 years the Orange Order has not walked down Drumcree Garvaghy Road. That restriction didn't appear from nowhere. It followed years of confrontation, violence and division surrounding a period in which people lost their lives and, amid the horror of 1998, three young brothers, Richard, Mark and Jason Quinn, were murdered in a loyalist petrol-bomb attack.

Yet here we are in 2026, after an administrative failure opened the original decision to legal challenge, with men sitting through the night in court and now apparently prepared to wait however long it takes to exercise their "right" to walk down one particular road.

But why?

Tradition matters. Freedom matters. The rule of law matters. But so do remorse, empathy, responsibility and knowing when a tradition has become more damaging than meaningful.

Nobody needs to surrender their culture or identity. But after almost three decades, if exercising a right means insisting on walking through a community that overwhelmingly does not want you there, reopening wounds that Northern Ireland has spent years trying to heal, perhaps the bigger question isn't whether you can.

It's why you still feel you must.

At some point preserving tradition has to matter less than preserving peace. Otherwise we aren't honouring history - we're refusing to learn from it.

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Reminds me of how I only learned in the last year or so that Ctrl Shift Esc on modern Windows will jump directly to the task manager, unlike Ctrl Alt Del which now has an extra step associated with it which can be especially annoying if your computer is hanging badly.
