For even the solitary witch never truly walks alone. She may be rarely seen at those guerrilla covens of extreme need, but she travels with the spirits of the land. Her constant companions are genii locorum – whispering, protecting and teaching as she navigate her way. – #EmilyCBanting #WitchSky

Witchcraft is not consolatory hokum. It doesn't offer tepid answers to hard questions and even harsher circumstances. It offers us relationships with the land, its spirits and ourselves. Relationships may be rough and require work, but they get us through. – #EmilyCBanting #WitchSky

Goodnight from High-on-the-Hill Farm, where the Trigg family are enjoying a stubble-goose feast after having paid their quarter day tribute to Faery. Goodnight from Ralph Shenwood calling on the Archangels for strength to resist answering the Hoarse Hag’s call. Goodnight from Hookland.

For when they hold the Feast of the Archangels and they make much in their sermons of St. Michael defeating Satan, I ponder why so many churches resemble nothing other than forts. Angels and saints that need stone security against the world fail to impress me. – #CLNolan

We were pylon pilgrims. Each transmission tower a sacred destination in the electric ley of the land. The Hum called us to walk to them, to move under their steel legs and into our temporary temples. We marched lines of electrical ecstasy. – Tattoo Labyrinth Dave #VOH

From the introduction to the Hookland Tourist Board I=SEE STRANGE HOOKLAND book:
REMEMBER:

Don’t go out by yourself at night. Many things in this book are thought to be imaginary, but being out by yourself in the dark can still be dangerous – even if you don’t encounter the Danebury Grim.

If you see something that scares you, tell a parent or a trusted adult such as a teacher. In extreme cases where you can’t find an adult you can trust, you could even tell a police officer.

Don’t provoke Faeries of any type. You would not like people shouting your name, poking you in your bed with a stick or throwing stones in your bath, so don’t do it to Faeries. No-one likes ill-behaved children, least of all the Elves of Hookland.

Don’t signal for UFOs with torches. It is not only a waste of batteries, it can be misinterpreted by the emergency services. Besides, we can’t promise that all UFOs are friendly or interpret your signal as a positive message.

Show some respect for the graves of the dead. If you were buried in the ground you wouldn’t appreciate another child dancing on your grave or trying to dig it up would you?

Remember to take extra care when looking for things around water – both by the sea and along rivers and pools. Even if he is imaginary, the King-Under-the-Sea should be shown some deference and Stay Belows not encouraged to grab at you when dangling your legs or trailing your hands in cool, apparently calm water.

Imaginary things can’t hurt you unless you believe in them with all your heart and then they are really quite dangerous.

Railway workers report the signal box at Lugford as haunted. Talk of a constant presence, of being scrutinised as they work. Talk of objects being moved, levers being pulled. Odd voices down the line. A place not haunted by dread, but by unwelcome intrusion. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

We archaeologists tell the stories of the stones not to erase their mystery, not to undo their role as anchoring post for folklore, but to transmit the Long Neolithic. We give context for ghosts, provide new reasons for lithic pilgrimage. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday

As we've just had the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, known in Hookland as the Corn Maiden Moon, it seems appropriate share some of the folklore of the Heading the Corn. #FolkloreSunday
Full moon closest to the autumn equinox – Heading the Corn Part of the cultus in St. Urith in the county, but clearly also part of much older harvest festival traditions, the heading of the corn is the name for the ritual of the first sheath of corn cut being bound and taken to the nearest church so that the spirit of the saint could live in it to the next harvest. The sheath is traditionally taken on a cart, crowded with reapers, often wearing masks made of sack, shouting: ‘Hooky! Hooky! while the cart is led by an extravagantly dressed couple referred to as the Lord and Lady of the Harvest. Before the procession gets to the church to deliver the sheath, they will be met at a crossroad by a figure personifying death who will let them pass only after the shedding of blood (usually done by the nicking of the hands of the Lord and Lady of the Harvest). When the sheath has been delivered and a thanksgiving mass given, a usually somewhat riotous harvest supper is then held.

A constant recommendation.
J is for …
Jansson
One of my favourite imagined places to inhabit as unhappy
child was Moominvalley. I am still an unofficial ambassador
for it, telling young writers I mentor that they will struggle
to find a better constructed fictional world. I push those
writers into reading Tove Jansson because she makes
words dance, because she makes locations shimmer with
a sense of nature holding within it the not-quite-real that
may manifest at any moment. I push because she is one
of the finest storytellers, because her imagination still
pushes me. I hope that is all in Hookland, as no book ever
taught me more about the power of dark absence in a text
than Moominvalley In November. While the Moomins may
sometimes overshadow Jansson’s stunning lines as illus
trator, the sheer fairytale menace of her early paintings,
they cannot obscure her power to create spaces where the
mind may walk in hope of wonder

Madley is one of those villages where you have to generously apply the car’s horn to scatter clouds of chickens and children from the road. There’s always a bollock-naked drunk in the gutter, always an effigy on the green. Even by Hookland standards, it has a loose grip on reality. - #DICallaghan

#ReEnchantment is resistance.
I believe humanity always lives in its folklore. I believe humanity is stories. Those stories walk and those stories need places to live. Those tales are how we relate to landscape. Those tales are how we connect to each other, how we build community and how we resist. That is why Hookland exists. For in the hopeless moment when all the territory is darkening bruise, that’s when we need stories and re-enchantment the most.

From tonight's Hookland talk on Re-enchantment as Resistance at @treadwells-books.bsky.social. 'Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom.' #FolkloreThursday
Folklore can ignite enchantment within us. Enchantment that fuels our imaginations. Enchantment that shifts our consciousness, allows us to envisage new and better worlds. It begins the process of manifesting the changes we desire. Re-enchanted, the world is full of new, feral possibilities. Re-enchanted our imagination is an accessible superpower.

The stories we intentionally absorb, the stories we select to tell ourselves, they allow us to live in the world differently. They allow us to make and remake the world differently.

Folklore is often the wild frontier of belief, the place where wonder may still live. Here be Woodwoses, here be Harrowhounds, the ghosts which whisper wisdom. We need this space. We ache for the sublime. For re-enchantment is an assertion of wonder and the numinosity of our relationships with landscape. Re-enchantment is an assertion of our collective ability to both imagine and experience better worlds. As a refusal of despair, as a lensing of hope. In re-enchantment we stop dreaming of inevitable apocalypse and find the permissive space to tell stories of hope.

Re-enchantment is personal metamorphosis. The space in which we grow glowing red eyes to patrol our communities against this long night of authoritarian pisspuffinry. The space in which we develop iron-hard fur, immune to the curses reductionist racists, misogynists, homophobes and AI cultists throw at us. Re-enchantment as the permissive circle where we can voyage into ourselves and find the marvels and bravery we need to deal with this age of violent bruising. This is why I walk the territory of folklore. Wear my witch-cloak of swan feathers, hold hag stone to my eye. This is why I created Hookland as a home for stories, a community for Fully-grown Changelings.
