My latest: Following Wednesday's failed bid by Senate Dems to block Trump's pocket rescission, Trump WH, once again, trampled over Congress’ power of the purse. Several experts point out their use of the “pocket rescissions” loophole is more an admission of guilt than a clever trick.

With all due respect, have you talked to any of us former FWS employees about why we left? The lack of hiring to replace us is a problem, but I think turnover will be high if the reasons we left aren’t addressed. I would guess other agencies have similar issues.

For months, I’ve been raising the alarm about the loss of staff at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and how it is imperiling their work protecting our wildlife and public lands. In December, 25% of the agency was gone. Now, it’s nearly 40%. But FWS still refuses to address the staffing crisis.

I think something to consider here is that Collins voted to confirm Russ Vought as OMB Director despite the fact that he said a billion times that he thought Trump had a constitutional right to illegally impound funds, and now she’s doing shocked Pikachu reactions.
Sen. Susan Collins • fAl

@SenatorCollins

Without warning or consultation, Congress just received an $810 million package of pocket rescissions from the Administration. This is the most recent attempt by this Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to undermine Congress's Constitutional power of the purse.
This move shows that OMB intentionally withheld these funds for months to execute this unlawful cancellation of appropriations that were approved on a bipartisan basis and signed into law.Not only is the delay itself an impoundment that was not reported to Congress, but also it is a usurpation of Congress's appropriations powers.
OMB is an agency of the executive branch. It does not get to decide which programs are worth funding.
The independent Government Accountability Office has concluded that pocket rescissions are unlawful and not permitted by the Impoundment Control Act. Any effort to rescind appropriated funds without congressional approval is a clear violation of the law.
I will work with my colleagues to address these illegal actions.

At least in our research agency, there has been a hiring freeze since the moment Trump 2.0 took office. So, even when Congress appropriates the money to fund us, we cannot hire back positions we lost. This includes scientists, technicians, and admin support.

Dear Director Bhattacharya and Deputy Director Lorsch:

I noticed that the NOFO
Mechanistic Toxicology of METALS: Metal Exposure, Transport, Action, Localization, and Susceptibility (RP1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
is on the Grants.gov forecasted site.

https://simpler.grants.gov/opportunity/2b9da5ac-c1a1-4a64-ac18-4c707c6925ed

The estimated post date is December 4th, 2026 with an estimated application due date of January 5th, 2027.

I know that you have expressed concerns about reduced trust in NIH and in high administrative burden. Having a new NOFO with relatively little public background or process with a 1-month period for application preparation over the holiday season is not an even remotely reasonable way to solicit the best scientific projects, puts a substantial burden on investigators and offices of sponsored research, and reeks of a setup for funding a targeted set of investigators who may be receiving inside knowledge about this initiative.

Certainly you can do better than this; NIH certainly did when I was employed there (and for many years before and after).

Sincerely,

We created plots that had different densities of species (2, 4, or 8) at two different densities of plants/plot. We also had multiple two-species treatments that varied in the functional groups used.
Species combinations used in experimental design with ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi in bold, scientific names in italics, and functional group in parentheses (T = tree, S = shrub, F = fern, V = vine). Botanical families represented include Myrtaceae (Metrosideros polymorpha), Aquifoliaceae (Ilex anomola), Araliaceae(Cheirodendron trigynum), Rubiaceae (Coprosma rhynchocarpa), Rosaceae (Rubus hawaiensis), Ericaceae (Leptecophylla tameiameiae), Dryopteridaceae(Dryopteris wallichiana), and Lamiaceae (Stenogyne calaminthoides). All species combinations were planted in single and double densities. Functional group representation varies among the two-species combinations
