Please find 5 minutes today to draft your response to this drastic change in NIH Peer review. The deadline is October 13. I pasted my own response below as an example--please share widely 🧪
I am an NIH-funded scientist who has run a lab for 34 years. I have served on literally dozens of NIH peer-review study sections, most recently this past June. I also have served in Council for both NIGMS and for CSR. I thus am very familiar with the current review process from both the prospective of an applicant and a reviewer. I strongly oppose the proposed changes. While NIH peer review is not perfect, it is the best system thus far devised, and is the envy of colleagues in other countries. Three experts in the field spend hours reviewing each proposal, using their knowledge of important issues to rank proposals by signficance, feasibility and impact. Then they present their opinions to a panel of 20 or more expert sin the broader field, and a spirited discussion ensues. Thus each proposal is put through very stringent process, and the resulting ranking has substantial value in times when funding is limited. Having review many times, I know that the proposed binning would provide equal "scores" to proposals that were greet with substanailly different degrees of enthusiasm. Further, grants binned just bowl and just above the 25% cutoff would be subsequently viewed as if the enthusiasm for them quite divergent, certainly not an accurate summary. The current fine-grained system avoids these issues. Removing it will make the task of NIH Program officers more difficult. Binning also allows non-scientific issues to take on disproportionate weight in funding, an issue that will be accentuated if political appointees are making the ultimate decisions. Please retain the current system.

Being a pedestrian in Reno is infuriating/downright dangerous. I dropped the car for service and walked home. At the 1 busy intersection, I wait for ped cross signal and walk. A lady got upset about waiting to turn right ON RED, and peeled out before I had made it to the opposite sidewalk. F cars.

I don't think privatization is the answer. Weather data such as this needs to be publicly available and free. The answer is this administration shouldn't have gutted NOAA's budget with the horrible DOGE cuts.

Less than 1% of major party nominees for Congress are working class. It is one of the most fundamental ways that Congress is not representative. And their views, e.g. on unregulated gambling websites, are apt to be different. www.bloomberg.com/features/202...

Great morning with the shorebirds. First time I've put in a solid lying down on the sand session in about a month and a half. The heat was getting a little unbearable by 10am, so I'm glad I was able to get down early. 🪶
A marbled Godwin or some sort of larger size shorebird with a large beak sticking that beak the sand a gull juvenile who looks like who looks like they've been who looks like they've been through a thing or two shaking their feathers off standing in the surf A pelican riding above the waves, it looks a little out of focus but I'll take it A sanderling running with its wings up . I do not want an "AI companion". I want to read the author-written synopsis (aka abstract) without Wiley's Clippy-analog pop-up in the way. If anyone knows a better way to make those go away forever, LMK

I click on this annoying Wiley "AI companion" pop-up because it is the only way I have figured out to get a point where I can make it go away (using the teeny tiny x at the top right of the AI companion box in screenshot 2).

My latest: Following Wednesday's failed bid by Senate Dems to block Trump's pocket rescission, Trump WH, once again, trampled over Congress’ power of the purse. Several experts point out their use of the “pocket rescissions” loophole is more an admission of guilt than a clever trick.

the weirdest part is that he never came out and said what the gripe was. It was a bunch of gobbldegook about how the co-authors don't respect his work and how he would have to "let go of my views of fairness and authorship". I had to use damn context clues lol.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but where your name sits in the author order in the middle (not first or second or last) of a long list of names is not worth wasting emotions over. And you shouldn't email me about it. Email the lead author FFS.
