Apparently Manchester City have cheated by buying trophies in a slightly different way to the way other clubs buy trophies in a league awash in cash from dodgy sources and this is bad. I mean I guess so, whatever. Good result for the Seals on Saturday, 4-1 at home to Worksop.

The Treasury will be well pleased with the commitment to abolish the triple lock, restore a health and care levy and to begin a serious debate on our relations with the EU. It will be nervous about social care - it always is - but will recognise that something has to give. #soundmoney #freetrade

Russia has one enormous strategic advantage of which it is taking advantage. It can daily attack civilian targets--hospitals, universities, markets--knowing that while Ukraine can do the same, the Ukrainians are too humane to do so.

There are subjects on which Mr Ratcliffe has some knowledge or expertise. Immigration in society is clearly not such a topic: the BBC had to clarify that his comments 6 months ago were based on a massive mistake + misunderstanding of his key claim. His new comments were entirely contentless.

I do find odd that we all apparently enjoy the right to enter a hotel uninvited, go to the guest floors, knock on the doors of complete strangers on the grounds that they are not white - and yet not commit any offence.

This is the crucial paragraph imv It was *how* coalition implemented austerity that was so damaging i.e. cutting upstream, preventative services that would deal with demand earlier and more cheaply Now we have a fire-fighting state, forced to spend more to deal with very acute demand

If you want a boring sense of entitlement to always being in the top six then support a ”top six” club. If you want the sheer sense of terror of realising that any fleeting success will be likely matched by relegation, then other teams like Aston Villa are available.

Every time I turn on the News, someone is discussing who *might* be Chancellor and what that *might* mean. These are good and important questions, but they are not "News". We need to find a way to shift the dial back to reporting on what *has* happened, rather than speculating on what *might*.

Exactly right. What makes it worse is that Hunt was blowing up the public finances to set a political trap for the Opposition. We can criticise Labour for walking into that trap, rather than having the courage to call it out, but it was a shameful way for a Chancellor to act & has done lasting harm

This is something the Victorians understood: that democracy is dangerously vulnerable to plutocracy, and that it needs to build defences against that. Our defences are in tatters. Rebuilding them is one of the most urgent tasks facing our politics.

Keir Starmer's response to Nigel Farage at PMQs just now was probably the most powerful and eloquent I have seen him in the Commons. The full answer is worth reading.
“A grieving family have asked us not to respond in the way that the leader of Reform has responded. They've asked us not to. They have lost their son in the most appalling circumstance. They make a simple plea of us as human beings to please not exploit that. That is their plea to us.
“We all need to reflect on those words of Henry's father. My response, and the response of others to be fair, has been focused on the lessons to be learned so we can deliver justice. “His response has been to appeal for rage – rage. That's his response to a father who has lost his son and asked for that not to happen.
“Exploiting this tragedy to create grievance and division would be wrong in any circumstances, but to do it when the family are expressly saying please don't is unforgivable. It shows exactly who he is.”

Ref Mandelson...As I hear it security vetting outcomes sent to relevant Whitehall department (in this case FCDO) are not framed as pass or fail..rather as there no risks or here are the risks we found...the pass/fail judgment is then made by department. None of reasoning can be passed to ministers
