i'd take it even a step further than you do: it's not that social media produces fascists, but that it produces antisocial behaviour broadly, where even good acts of protest can quickly devolve online into just another method for expressing antisocial impulses in a way that feels "safe" to do

If our mission is just to train students to become good workers, then Torenberg is right--why not leave that to the industries themselves, who actually know what they're looking for?

The more we buy into the logic that academia needs to be more like "the real world"--the more we buy into the idea that all we're doing is training students to go out and be good workers--the less we are fulfilling any sort of distinct mission, and the less exciting our work is our students.

Some background on this rumour and what's been going round (apologies for screenshotting from the other place):
Tweet from @ElliotGlazer on 2026-09-05:

>Be me
>Told several days ago thirdhand by OAI employee Anthropic solved a Millennium Prize Problem
>"No way it wouldn't leak in this way"
>Told Wednesday by a different friend at OAI that, actually, he heard it was two.
>"Ok I'm updating against further, obviously it wasn't two."
>OAI source says they'd actually garbled it, friend informs me.
>"Ok"
>Goes on Reddit and tells people spreading the rumor it is unfounded
>Terry coincidentally posts a hypothetical about NS getting solved very next day with lots of specifics about the hypothetical proof and its Lean file
>Anthropic formalizes FLT
>Another clarification from intermediary between me and OAI rumor guy "I'd only retracted the "two" from "two Millennium Problems solved," not the whole rumor"
>Are you fucking kidding me
>Goes on reddit and edit my posts to clarify the clarification I was given about the rumors
>Curran's "prediction" seems to align with everything.
>Confident enough to QT/boost his prediction, with the context that I gave
>Terry writes follow-up post addressing the rumors, that says he hasn't heard any development on Navier-Stokes, reads sincere to me
>Curran has no independent relevant info here btw
>None of the OAI rumor spreaders can trace their beliefs back to any non-OAI source
>Math prof friend says he heard from a credible source "It was Hodge not NS."

I'm going back to bed.

Weezer releases “Island in the Sun” 25 years ago today — the most licensed track in their catalog. “The funny thing is, the song wasn't a real radio hit,” said Cuomo. “I can only speculate that it's because the song has a cleaner guitar sound, which makes it easier for a more mainstream audience."

My only comment on this new "spreadsheet people" discourse is that the anger from scientists etc. at what is meant to be a jibe at those who "know the price of everything but the value of nothing" is yet another victim of the widespread overuse of Microsoft Excel where better tools are available.

One is a depiction of an intelligent and charismatic man who is considered a brilliant tactician destined for greatness, but due to his disillusion and resentment, morphs into an egomaniacal tyrant who inhabits a fortified bunker until his own team "terminate" him. The other is Apocalypse Now.
