My life is what's possible when government works: I grew up on SNAP, in public housing and studied at Boston Public Schools. So, when I sued Trump for weaponizing SNAP benefits against our immigrant community, it was personal. You deserve government that delivers for everyone without discrimination.

And here’s the entirely foreseeable result of a law that imposes massive penalties if states give families the wrong amount of SNAP benefits, but no penalties if they make it virtually impossible for eligible families to get benefits in the first place.
But Savaiano says Nebraska DHHS workers more recently started asking for more detailed financial and medical information that he believes has led to unnecessary burdens and loss of food assistance to qualified Nebraskans.

He said, for example, that some new and renewing SNAP applicants have had to get signed confirmation from a neighbor about who eats in their household.

“The state is now requiring verification for absolutely everything,” Savaiano said.

“It’s making it harder and harder for people to apply and receive SNAP.”

P.S. The decision to terminate the government's longstanding annual food insecurity survey came shortly after the President signed the deepest SNAP cuts in history into law.
In making certain data private or changing collection methodologies on the orders of the president, this administration is effectively punching holes in the public record. Data.gov removed nearly 3,400 data sets during the first month of Donald Trump’s second term, scrubbing information from the Census Bureau, the Office of Justice Programs, the CDC, and more. The CDC tracks pregnancy risk in the U.S. in an effort to prevent infant mortality; staffing reductions have reportedly made that information inaccessible. Since 1995, the USDA has been tracking the number of American households experiencing food insecurity; the Trump administration discontinued a survey of that data in September, claiming in a press release that this information was “politicized” and “costly” to produce, and did “nothing more than fear monger.”

Because housing assistance is drastically underfunded, only 1 in 4 eligible low-income households receive it. Providing it to all who qualify would cost $118 billion a year—a tiny fraction of the proposed $1.5 *trillion* defense budget for 2027. Poverty would fall 13% overall and 23% for children.

My statement on President Trump’s combat operations in Iran⬇️
OCASIO-CORTEZ STATEMENT ON
TRUMP'S COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAN
"The American people are once again dragged into a war they did not want by a president who does not care about the long-term consequences of his actions. This war is unlawful. It is unnecessary. And it will be catastrophic.

"Just this week, Iran and the United States were negotiating key measures that could have staved off war. The President walked away from these discussions and chose war instead.President Trump flippantly acknowledged the possibility of American casualties, stating "that often happens in war.'

"Mr. President: this was not an inevitability. This is a deliberate choice of aggression when diplomacy and security were within reach. Stop lying to the American people.

"Violence begets violence. We learned this lesson in Iraq. We learned this lesson in Afghanistan. And we are about to learn it again in Iran. Bombs have yet to create enduring democracies in the region and this will be no different.

"In moments of war, our Constitution is unambiguous: Congress authorizes war. The President does not. I will do my part to uphold our Constitution by voting YES on Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie's War Powers Resolution. Every member of Congress must join us in rejecting this aimless war.
