In the wake of the largest rollback of civil rights for a minority group in modern history, some Dems aren't asking how to undo it, they're asking for permission to support it. There has been a gusher of money poured from VC and SV types into Searchlight, Third Way, and The Argument to enable it.

these people reject democracy. theyre openly hostile to the idea of sharing a society or a planet with others. they very expressly have launched a project to destroy whatever communal legal order we have in place. they do not want to share this society or the public wealth with you. agree with them

The idea that there is a "Left" in American politics is an absurd right wing fantasy, which of course is politically useful to them, but unfortunately it's also useful to centrist media figures who need it to be true for their somber above-it-all commentary to make sense

i think the big data center backlash has a lot to do with technology getting worse, costing more, building a surveillance state, destroying the environment, owned by a class of wealthy elite that coalesced behind the fascist regime that made clear they’d sacrifice humanity for their own power growth

Was Jonestown inevitable? Was the Oklahoma City bombing inevitable?
I don’t think so.
Remove Bin Laden from the equation and I don’t think you get a 9/11.
He wasn’t even a product of a country that the US bombed nor destabilized.

I would like to see more companies admit this - being a public company no longer means running a successful, thriving business. It strictly means delivering growth to investors, every single quarter, who do not care at all about the product the company sells or the people who produce it.

There was a graph going around a few weeks ago comparing gun deaths in America vs heat deaths in Europe and 1) This per capita graph works better, and 2) highlights to some extent how much of it is people sticking to their guns... or their lack of air con. hannahritchie.substack.com/p/heat-guns-...
Bar chart titled "Heat versus gun deaths in Europe and the United States," comparing average annual deaths per 100,000 people around 2024, using excess-death methodology for heat. US gun deaths (13.27, split into suicides, homicides, and other) is the highest bar, followed closely by Europe's heat deaths (11.22). Both dwarf US heat deaths (1.94) and European gun deaths (1.20). The takeaway: heat kills Europeans at a rate approaching how guns kill Americans, while each region's other category stays comparatively small.

eliminated the ability of the Trump admin to create a pretext to make NJ into the next Minnesota for an ICE “surge”. This is exactly how to protect our neighbors from illegal Federal overreach while also ensuring safe free speech & protests.

The NYT removed the "um"s in Trump's answer on Taiwan, but put "um"s in AOC's answer on Taiwan to make her look dumb Trump said "Um, I would say 'like' is maybe too strong a word...um, no, I'm holding that in abeyance and it depends on China, depends, it's a, it's a.." L: Trump R: AOC Video below
The New York Times: The American president’s comments had been released over the weekend, after Mr. Trump left a summit with Mr. Xi in Beijing on Friday. He said he was keeping on hold a decision about a package of weapons to Taiwan worth around $14 billion, and described it as a “very good negotiating chip” that could be used with Beijing.

“I’m holding that in abeyance and it depends on China,” he said in an interview with Fox News. It was not immediately clear what Mr. Trump wanted China to do in return. The New York Times: The visit also demonstrated the relative foreign policy inexperience of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who has made a few overseas trips since taking office but does not sit on any House committees devoted primarily to world affairs. She struggled at times to formulate succinct answers at a nighttime panel session, during which she was asked probing and specific questions about how to respond to international crises.

Questioned about whether the United States should send troops to defend Taiwan if China invaded the island, she stalled for roughly 20 seconds before offering a substantive response.

“I think that, uh, this is such a, a — you know, I think that — this is a, um — this is of course, a, uh, a very longstanding, um, policy of the United States,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said, before saying that the country should try to avoid reaching that point with China in the first place.
