I don’t think I’m the only person who will appreciate this
Triangular diagram labelled The Introvert
Hierarchy of Needs.

Top: Self-actualisation - A completely empty house. An arrow pointing to the house says “Nobody needs anything. Nobody is coming home for hours. Phone on silent.”

The next level is Esteem - Plans getting cancelled. An arrow here says “‘Sorry, we're going to have to rearrange.’ Oh no. That's terrible. I'm devastated.”

Next level: Belonging - One person you actually like. No group chat. No networking. No "let's go round and introduce ourselves." Just one person you can talk absolute shit with.

Fourth level: Safety - An escape route. Own car. End seat. Knowing exactly when the event finishes. A believable reason to leave early.

Bottom of pyramid: Physiological needs - Being left the fuck alone for a bit. Food. Water. Sleep. 45 minutes where nobody speaks to you.

I spent almost all of yesterday baking down a pumpkin and converting it into pumpkin butter. My freezer's stocked with enough to keep us until Xmas, if I ration it. Pumpkins seem to disappear out of the shops by the first week of November here, which is frustrating. I'll be doing puree batches next.

Just called a fancy restaurant to ask whether they could accommodate a vegetarian tomorrow. "Certainly, sir," she replied. "We offer hay or silage," with only a touch of mirth. I hope the legendary receptionist of that particular equestrian centre has a very good weekend. (One wrong digit.) 🙄

@patch-notes-int.bsky.social made its debut in the Irish scene this Thursday gone! Ellie and I presented our new title, 1000 Cuts, at a pitching event. We got a delightfully warm reception, replete with business card exchanges, and even had devs asking us for our slide deck afterwards. Good craic.

Hey all. After being quiet for months, I can finally share what I’ve been working on: I’m co-founding a video game studio! With @fairemortal.bsky.social! It’s called Patch Notes Interactive, and I’ll be its creative director. We’re making bold, story-driven titles, and I could not be happier.
A logo for Patch Notes Interactive. The words are written in hot pink against a dark grey, staticky background.

What kind of quixotic individuals would start a bookshop on an upper floor of a building shortly to be demolished? Our downstairs neighbour, Sidney Vard, said at the time: 'You're young men, starting off in business. And I don't want to discourage you. But you're bloody fools!'

I saw this sign posted on Tumblr and thought "is that a chainsaw, or is it in fact an extremely hardcore duck?"
A photo of a sign that indicates "no chainsaws allowed", made from a stylized image of a chainsaw surrounded by a red circle with a diagonal line through it. The photo was taken by the person who runs the qualitysigns.tumblr.com blog in Doncaster, UK, in 2025. A picture of a duck by me. The duck's head is shaped like the chainsaw from the sign in the previous image and the rest of the duck is spiky and studded to match. The caption says "chainsaw duck".

Patrick Ness came in & signed a stack of books - we are trying to behave normally about it! Ness is one of that small but vital cadre of writers that gets & keeps boys reading through the difficult period when they are easily lost - a vital weapon!
Patrick Ness stands beneath the Chapters Bookstore sign holding Piper at the Gates of Dusk. A second photo shows signed Patrick Ness books on display, including Monsters of Men, The Knife of Never Letting Go and Piper at the Gates of Dusk.

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.
