Massive win for Bohs. A lesson about switching off too soon but five wins in a row and the double is on somehow. I was a confirmed Reynolds sceptic but the team looks really well coached.

Started a reread of Septology by Jon Fosse, translated with sublime skill by Damion Searls. The feeling I had when reading this for the first time (in three separate volumes) has never left me and in truth I've probably been seeking it in all the books I've read since.

So excited to see the cover for my novel based on the life of Irish artist Harry Clarke. It tells the story of his controversial Geneva Window as seen through the eyes of a young female assistant in Clarke’s studio. Set in 1920s Dublin, publishing January with @stairwellbooks.bsky.social
The cover features a highly detailed stained glass panel by Clarke. It features the character of Nelly from Liam O’Flaherty’s Mr Gilhooley. He picks her up from the street and she dances for him wearing only a thin veil. The figure of Nelly is depicted with a head of golden curls. Her pink veil, decorated with tiny star and heart shapes and a yellow zigzag border, seems to float around her. Clarke used a photo of a dancer from the Ballet Russes as inspiration. Cover text reads ‘The Window, A Novel, Catherine Crichton’

Am insanely busy these times and my brain is full of words and numbers, but heroically I still fit some fine literature into my life. Hunter by Shuang Xuetao, translated from Chinese by Jeremy Tiang. I enjoyed Rouge Street and this story collection has started well.

Watched Spirited Away last night. My second studio Ghibli film. Loved the imagination and originality in it. I've also seen Boy and Heron. The films are a little light on story/character depth but of course pitched perfectly for intended audience. I thought Wolf Children had more adult appeal.

Well worth a read. This bit is so true: “What happens,” she explains, as she lays out her creative method, “is that not only do voices come to you, but it’s almost like looking at a wall and seeing a movie playing on it; you know, you see everything at once… and the voices pop into your head.”

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

"I understood that to live with a work of fiction ... one has to love it quite passionately and be comfortable with all its moods and habits, or – as Colm Tóibín puts it with delicious domestic flair – one has to stay for long periods of time in one’s “mental pyjamas”."
