@patch-notes-int.bsky.social made its debut in the Irish scene this Thursday gone! Ellie and I presented our new title, 1000 Cuts, at a pitching event. We got a delightfully warm reception, replete with business card exchanges, and even had devs asking us for our slide deck afterwards. Good craic.

Hey all. After being quiet for months, I can finally share what I’ve been working on: I’m co-founding a video game studio! With @fairemortal.bsky.social! It’s called Patch Notes Interactive, and I’ll be its creative director. We’re making bold, story-driven titles, and I could not be happier.

Banning "superintelligent" 🤢 AI plays right into industry rhetoric and keeps the focus off immediate, real world harms such as privacy, bias, and labor. Literally the same name of the silly Bostrom book everyone was reading 12 years ago.

I hate the Citizenship Amendment Rules. It's one of the most plainly cruel proposals I can remember being put forward by the Irish government in quite some time. Does little other than harm those who are working hard to make Ireland their home. I'm keeping a very close eye on whoever endorses it.

Tomorrow, Count Binface faces off against Farage. For those who think he can't pull it off, in 2002, H'Angus the Monkey became the mayor of Hartlepool, defeating Labour. The actor Stuart Drummond stood down as mascot afterwards, but won two more terms and was the first mayor to ever win three terms.

In all the furore about E.D.E Bell’s behaviour it’s important not to lose sight of the authors. What my friend Emma says here is heartbreaking. The downside of relying on whisper networks is they leave newcomers who have not yet been integrated vulnerable.

Morning, all. Felt the need to say something given a bit of discourse in Writer Land this week.
Text in this image reads:

What I’m writing here maybe should’ve been said publicly a while ago. Except publishing is all about power, and when you’re the author, you don’t feel like you have much sometimes.

There’s a publisher out there behaving in ways that, to be very Canadian, I find abhorrent. One I’m tied to because they’ve published me and still hold most of the rights to that work.

I’ve watched this publisher attack friends and colleagues, spread disinformation, goad well-meaning people and use others as shields. I’ve watched people reach out in genuine kindness and be labeled the enemy. I’ve experienced toxic behavior firsthand. I’m watching it happen again, right now.

Last year, I set boundaries and addressed my concerns privately, and you can imagine the fallout from that.

But what matters more is the idea of unaware authors being trapped by this publisher, while the same cycle repeats. There are plenty of genuinely good people spending their energy raising red flags, so I will, too.

I may delete this because it’s a bit spicy but it shouldn’t be lost on us that games being turned into TV is essentially harvesting the stories written by those who don’t have union representation or healthcare with WGA by those that do. Our stories are good enough for TV but the writers aren’t?
