The incredibly eccentric Bardwell monument at St Edmund's, Southwold is the resting place of local architect William Bardwell d1853 and other members of his family. Built from brick it's clad in various tiles and odd pieces of mouldings, a real hotch potch of all sorts! #31DaysofGraves

Our dramatic memorial to Lt General William Hargrave shows him rising from his coffin as a figure of Time breaks the dart of Death who loses his crown and falls downwards. Sculptor Louis Francois Roubiliac achieved the illusion of depth and perspective by painting the stone #31DaysOfGraves #Brick
An ornate, three-dimensional stone funerary monument set against a stone wall.

At the center, a muscular, semi-draped man rises dramatically from a stone tomb, looking upward while throwing off his shroud, which billows above him. Above him, a brick pyramid appears to shatter and crumble, with a small angel blowing a trumpet in the upper left.

To the right of the rising figure, a winged, bearded figure of Time holding a broken scythe leans forward, looking down at a skeleton representation of Death tangled in drapery at his feet.

An inscribed plaque on the tomb’s side dedicates the memorial to Lieutenant General William Hargrave. Below, a round stone wreath frames another inscription dedicated to two friends lost at sea. The base is decorated with two crests.A detailed stone sculpture depicts a muscular man rising from a tomb, looking upward with wide eyes and an open mouth. He holds a large, draped shroud above his head, creating a dramatic canopy. To the upper left, a small cherub with wings rests on a cloud, blowing a long horn. Behind them, a wall of stone blocks appears to crumble and separate, adding to the dynamic sense of resurrection or awakening.A close-up shot of a white marble sculpture depicting a muscular, bearded man with a wide, intense gaze and a tuft of hair on his head. He has a large, feathered wing extending from his right shoulder. The figure is set against a background of textured, angular stone blocks and a brick archway.

#31DaysofGraves #Brick Distant relatives the Rankins were for many generations owners of a brick and tile works in Stranraer. The family grave is in Inch Old Parish kirkyard & a good example of the idea to always check the other faces of a gravestone - transcript in alt txt. More at buff.ly/r8XnSbz
A square gravestone has the following inscription over two of its sides: Erected by Thomas Rankin senior, Stranraer, in memory of Deborah his wife, who died 1st May 1868 in her 91st year. Their children, Elizabeth died 12th April 1820, aged 11 months, Thomas died 20th June, 1820 aged 2 years & 7 months. Thomas Rankin who erected this stone died on 23rd July 1872 aged 93 years. “He was a faithful man and feared God above many” Neh. 7.2. “She stretched out her hands to the poor, and in her tongue was the law of kindness” Prov. 31.20.26 James Rankin their eldest son who died 16th June 1887 aged 77 years. P. Collins (Sculptor)
[On the north side] Also Richard Rankin his father died Octr 182 aged 73 and Elizabeth Perrie his mother died April 1821 aged 69. John Rankin his brother, died March 1839 aged 46. And Elizabeth Rankin his sister died March 1845 aged 64. Mary Ann Rankin sister of the erector, died 3d June 1879 aged 75.
Picture credit: Barbara Lewis on FindagraveThe 1851 census shows that in the village of Inch the Rankin family consisted of Thomas, a 71-year-old brick and tile maker; his wife Deborah and 35-year-old son Alex, a farina manufacturer (not bricks), and Thomas's sister Mary Ann, who was 45.

A fascinating little ring from the Punic necropolis on Ibiza. It depicts a bearded man in profile, but his hair and beard are composed of two birds (!), and his collar is a dolphin. 😮 The Punic inscription reads 'Belonging to Abdim'. 🏺 1/ 3rd-2nd c. BCE. #MuseoArqueológicoNacional 📸 me
A gold ring featuring a flat, circular shank that widens at the top to form an oval bezel with an engraving that may have served as a seal. The engraving depicts the profile of a bearded male head. The hair and beard are rendered as the images of two birds, and the neck terminates in a dolphin (looking like the collar of a garment). Beneath the figure, an inscription in Punic letters, displaying cursive traits, records the owner's name. The inscription can be transcribed as "Belonging to Abdim" (or Abdem).

Today's #31DaysOfGraves theme is "brick". My photo is of a mausoleum at #KensallGreen cemetery in #London. Sadly, many mausolea there are bricked-up as they had not been maintained and their doors were missing or broken and were getting vandalised. The inscription says "The tomb of the #Paul Family"
Photograph of a mausoleum built to resemble a classical temple. There are two columns either side of the bricked-up dorrway. The corners consist of two more square engaged columns. The pediment is decorated with curled vine leaves and a shield with an animal head, some form of cat I think. On the entablature is the inscription "The tomb of the Paul..." The last word is obscured by ivy but must be "family". To the left is a large tree.

Let's return to our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Liberton Kirk in Edinburgh, for #TombTuesday. This fine memorial to Sir John Baird, Lord Newbyth (1620-98), is located in the vestry, in what is said to be a converted family burial vault. The Baird family's heraldic boar has been included at the top.
A fine carved marble tomb, in white and grey-veined polished marble is affixed to the wall. It is embellished with what looks like two vases on either side at the top and tow high-relief skulls and crossbones at the bottom. A Latin inscription commemorating the John Baird of Newbyth and family is written across the centre of the memorial.A white carved marble coat of arms, showing a boar, with a sword above, on an ermine background. Mourning card with a tombstone-shaped area of black framing a white embossed tomb topped with a draped urn. The text reads: In Affectionate Remembrance of George Roake, Who departed this life April 20th, 1873, aged 22 years. Upon the bed of languishing
The promise was fulfilled;
Strength to his feeble frame was given,
And all his fears were stilled.
He softly breathed his life away,
And in its latest sigh,
Showed, resting on a Saviour’s love,
How sweet it was to die.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 12: Ordinary/Gewöhnlich 📍 Shinagawa / Tokyo / 🇯🇵
Deutsch

A densely packed Japanese cemetery lies amid multi-storey residential and commercial buildings. Numerous grey gravestones and tall, narrow wooden memorial tablets bearing Japanese characters stand close together. Small floral arrangements and stone monuments are scattered among them. In the background, a construction site with protective tarpaulins and excavators is visible. Tall, weathered building facades frame the cemetery on the left and in the centre, while a large tree with dense foliage stands on the right. The warm brown tones of the wooden tablets contrast with the grey stone and pale building facades. The confined setting and the multitude of memorial tablets create an unusual scene marked by striking contrasts.
