St Mary's Priory Church, Old Malton, Yorkshire North Riding The church of the Gilbertine priory. The façade is of c.1200 with a 15th century five light window. The north arcade dates from the late-12th century but was remodelled c.1500 after a fire.

14th century monsters The tower arch at Plungar, Leicestershire, features some small carvings. Clockwise, top left we have a dragon/lizard, a monster mouth eating a ballflower ("Appetite for Destruction" vibes), A two-legged beast with man's head & a fox? bishop being eaten by tiny dragons.

Skulls and Shrouds. This early 17th century monumental brass to Henry Millner (d.1635) is at Wickenby, Lincolnshire. Lying on a plinth is the shrouded corpse of Henry. Above are the arms of Milner (sable, a chevron between three snaffle-bits or) flanked by skulls on urns.

Packed with monuments. Some people have asked where the image from yesterday's Parish Church App announcement was taken. It is the chancel at St Mary's, Bottesford, Leicestershire. An unusual view taken from five metres up and giving a clear view of the Rutland tombs.

Early bricks. The ruins of Midley church in Kent stand alone in a field. The church is probably of the 15th century and was falling into ruin by 1573. Of particular note are the courses of brick between the stone and flint rubble of the walls.

Three Sisters. Stained glass by the Royal Bavarian Art Institute for Stained Glass of c.1894 at Horsford, Norfolk. At the top are the Pyramids and the Alps - the sisters died in Cairo and Davos, 1891-3, presumably having been sent there to convalesce after contracting TB.

The Bayeux Tapestry. What does this window, depicting Sir William Ferrers at Bere Ferrers church, Devon have to do with the Tapestry? The antiquarian draughtsman Charles Stothard fell off a ladder to his death while recording this panel, high up in the east window, in 1821. 1/2

On the 11th Sept 2001 I was looking at flats to rent in Cambridge. Beforehand I visited and recorded Landbeach church. The 15th century angel roof was taken at 12:46 GMT and the 17th century angel lectern at 13:03 GMT.

Cameras One and Ten I started my documentation of English parish churches in 1997 with the Epson PhotoPC 500 - 640x480 images, but amazing for the time. Ten cameras later the Canon 1Dx. Later this year I hope to swap to a Canon R3. It'll finish recording the remaining 2000 churches & their contents

A lovely white marble relief of an angel carrying a woman and her baby to heaven, made in 1840 by the Florentine sculptor Luigi Pampaloni. It commemorates 28 year old Louisa Gooch who died in 1838. Benacre, Suffolk.

The mid-12th century door at Stillingfleet, Yorkshire East Riding. The door's ironwork features two people and what seems to be a Viking longship. Nail hole evidence indicates there was also a tree and a mast on the ship.

Queen Victoria in a wheelchair. This unusual stained glass window at St Mary, Hook, Yorkshire West Riding depicts the Queen wearing spectacles and sitting in a wheelchair while visiting wounded soldiers.

Painted glass at Goldsborough, Yorkshire West Riding. 1859 but altered (ruined) in 1898. This is by the Belgian glass painter Jean-Baptiste Capronnier (1814-91). He produced glass for many churches in Belgium, France, Italy and England. Fun fact: Capronnier was also an entomologist.

The 12th century font at Reighton, Yorkshire East Riding. The tower space has a cobbled floor, but in the past they also covered the nave. Pevsner asks if the flooring is unique. Possibly - certainly I've never seen flooring like it at any other church.

The secrets of Sunk Island. Holy Trinity, 1876-7 by Ewan Christian. One of his best churches. Sunk Island, Yorkshire East Riding, is miles from anywhere, with only the old rectory and another house keeping the church company. They still have a working red telephone box.

In 1677, grieving parents Richard Sackville, Earl of Dorset, and his wife Frances commissioned sculptor Caius Cibber to memorialise their beloved 13-year-old son Thomas, who died on a tour of France. The result, at St Michael's, Withyham, Sussex, is Cibber's masterpiece.

Font Forgery It was illegal for a church to have wooden vessels. An enterprising 18th century churchwarden at Udimore, Sussex, had a wooden font made, then painted the exterior with a mix of plaster and sand to simulate stone, and the interior of the bowl grey to look like lead.

Barrels for a brewer. This is the Flemish ledger slab of Cornelius Zoetmans (c.1530) at St Michael, Playden, Sussex. Hier is begraven Cornelis Zoetmanns, bidt voer de ziele. Here is buried Cornelis Zoetmanns; pray for his soul. It depicts the barrels & implements of a brewer.

Coincidence. Adding to my database, I completed St Thomas, Exeter, Devon. I then decided to do some Kent churches and the first was Milton-next-Gravesend where I noticed a memorial to the same man. The photos were taken in 2008, six weeks apart. Gordon was quite famous (1/2)

The skull with beady eyes. This striking skull, with two polished beads inside the orbits, is on the base of the monument commemorating Thomas and Mary Walker (d.1682 & 1707) at St Mary Arches, Exeter, Devon.

One of only four known monuments by Robert Pierce, statuary and mason of Exeter - this example in Exeter Cathedral. Pierce "repaired to the flat roof of his house" and "terminated his existence" by slitting his throat on the 29th of October 1827, the day he was about to become bankrupt.

Stained glass in the east window of St Mary Steps, Exeter. 1966 by John Hayward. There is little love for 60s glass now. But I think, in time and much as with Victorian buildings, people will (as I did) come to appreciate it. IMO a million times better than most glass made now.

15th century panel depicting the Virgin and Child. All Saints, Okehampton, Devon. The only glass to survive the serious fire of 1842 which gutted the church. Removed from a window, cleaned and remounted in a lightbox in 2007.

Headstone of EPOP NHOJ who was 31755 days old. This amusing headstone is now inside the church at Stoke Damerel, Plymouth, Devon. John Pope was 87 years old and wanted to stand out from others in the churchyard.

The 18th century sundial at St Uny, Lelant, Cornwall features a skeleton holding an hourglass - time and death. But of more interest is the faded royal arms (1714-1801) at the top of the plate - the only example I know of a church sundial with royal arms.

The man with no face. This very good Purbeck marble military effigy is at Walkern, Hertfordshire. It dates from the early to mid 13th century and is thought to represent William de Lanvallei (d.1217).

No. You will not use Roman numerals. At first glance this 18th century tablet at Swalcliffe (Oxfordshire) looks fairly normal (apart from the modern light jammed in, top left). But close inspection reveals the mason who added a line to the inscription was used to using Roman numerals.
