Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

Onagadori Rooster. Ink and gouache on Fabriano Medioevalis, 85 × 132 mm, 2022.
Drawing in black ink, primarily in silhouette, of an Onagadori rooster with long flowing tail covert feathers on a plum blossom branch. The rooster's comb and wattle are the only spots of red. The piece is smaller than a postcard and is photographed with the traditional Chinese brush it was drawn with.

Double-crested cormorants perch at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. #BirdOfTheDay #Pairs #ECK #bird #birds #birdphotography #birdsofbluesky #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography #cormorant #cormorants

Double-crested cormorants perch at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, the viewer looks across a pond at two double-crested cormorants silhouetted in opposite directions as they perch on a branch extending from a submerged, fallen tree in the lower-left quadrant of the frame.

Across the far background, occupying the upper half of the image, is a skyline of rectangular and angular grain elevators that serve as reminders of the area's agricultural heritage.

The pond was once a rock quarry used to mine river rock for cement aggregate. Today, the former quarry has been transformed into a wetland and designated nature area.

The grain elevators are reflected in the pond's rippled water, adding depth, perspective, and visual interest to the composition. Their presence also connects the area's industrial and agricultural past with its present-day role as valuable wildlife habitat.

A beautiful scenic photograph of two double-crested cormorants enjoying a wetland habitat so vital to their survival.

Photograph of a sculpture against a light grey background. The sculpture is a brown-grey thorn branch twisting away from the camera, with some green leaves at the far end. In the middle the twist turns up a bit, and supports a Strawberry Bird - which is a bright red and yellow bird with green leaves at the back that is a strawberry. Some seeds in the front form a mouth with disturbingly bitey chompers.

Did you see the two-headed calf in the crop art 😭
Crop art from the Minnesota state fair of a two-headed calf under a night sky. It says “as he stares into the sky there are twice as many stars as usual”The Two-Headed Calf by Laura Gilpin (uncredited in the screenshot)

Tomorrow when the farm boys find this freak of nature, they will wrap his body in newspaper and carry him to the museum.

But tonight he is alive and in the north field with his mother. It is a perfect summer evening: the moon rising over the orchard, the wind in the grass. And as he stares into the sky, there are twice as many stars as usual.

Man. Of all the icons who have died recently, Wendell Berry breaks my heart the most 💔 Grateful for all the beauty & truth he left us
[After the bitter nights]
Wendell Berry

After the bitter nights
and the gray, cold days
comes a bright afternoon.
I go into the creek valley
and there are the horses, the black
and the white, lying in the warm
shine on a bed of dry hay.
They lie side by side,
identically posed as a painter
might imagine them:
heads up, ears and eyes
alert. They are beautiful in the light
and in the warmth happy. Such
harmonies are rare. This is
not the way the world
is. It is a possibility
nonetheless deeply seeded
within the world. It is
the way the world is sometimes.
