Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Poor little ratty! A plump owl with beautifully curved wings carries his prey off on a 15thC misericord at St Mary Magdalene, Newark, Nottinghamshire. #OwlishMonday 1546
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Somehow he'd thought that being a cherub was going to be a bit more exciting than this.. A glum little figure at King's College Chapel, Cambridge. #StainedGlassSunday 1222
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I think you'll find that's my barrel! Just some of the dozens of different characters on the Babington monument of c1538 at St Winifred's, Kingston on Soar. A pun on the family name (a tun being a barrel) there is allegedly a hundred little people, I didn't count them.. #SundayStonework 084
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 26/09/2026The openings in the bell stage of the Anglo-Saxon tower of St Bene't's, Cambridge are giving me a serious case of pareidolia.. #SteepleSaturday 0131
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Cheery cherubs and oversized vases on the font of 1632 at St Mary the Great, Cambridge. Vigorously carved I particularly like the figures waving their reading material as if they're desperate to share their favourite article with us. #FontsOnFriday 08112
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 24/09/2026There's something about the pattern of the bricks surrounding the vestry door at St Andrew's, Chesterton, Cambridge which is very pleasing to the eye indeed. They were added to the church in 1934. #Adoorableday #AdoorableThursday 0213
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Waking up in the 15thC doom at St Andrew's, Chesterton, Cambridge is only going to end well if there's an angel waiting to greet you, unfortunately the chap on the right has realised his fate is a much worse one. #WednesdayWallPaintings 0112

Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 13/09/2026There's no way you can walk into St Peter's, Tickencote, Rutland and not make a little sound of amazement when you first turn the lights on and see the stupendous 12thC chancel arch. #SundayStonework 741062
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I think this could possibly be my new favourite headstone, perfect for #SteepleSaturday at St Luke's, Hickling. I know it looks nothing like a church apart from the steeple, the weather vane is huge! The figure is completely out of scale with the most enormously long arms and odd hands. But..but..😍 0132
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 11/09/2026The font at Tewkesbury Abbey is a bit of a hotch potch. The Purbeck marble base is possibly from a 15thC monument that was subsequently removed whilst the capital decorated with ballflowers could be 14thC. The marble bowl was carved and added in the mid 19thC, a pleasant hotch potch! #FontsOnFriday 0155
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 09/09/2026This striking figure at St John the Baptist, Oxenton is possibly a depiction of St Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine and allegedly the person who discovered the true cross whilst on pilgrimage. The disembodied eyes from later images top right are rather disconcerting! #WednesdayWallPaintings 314918

Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 07/09/2026The rather bonkers Babington monument of c1538 at St Winifred's, Kingston on Soar. It's richly covered in carving including over a hundred little people cavorting with barrels. This is a pun or rebus on the family name as a tun/ton is another name for a barrel. #MonumentsMonday 39521
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Tom Denny's glorious windows at Tewkesbury Abbey were installed in 2002 and commemorate the anniversary of the Benedictines arrival 900 years previously. Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 02/09/2026A rather lovely memorial window definitely in the Arts and Crafts style at St Mary's, Car Colston, Nottinghamshire. Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Holy Trinity, Ratcliffe-on-Soar has two fonts. One was gifted to the church in the 1930s and I obviously found it dull because I took no photos. This is probably the original font, 14thC and full of rugged character with its smart 17thC cover.... much nicer. #FontsOnFriday 0478
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 27/08/2026A quiet little corner. The 13thC north door at St Giles, Holme, Newark, Nottinghamshire predates the enlarging and reordering of the church by the wealthy wool merchant John Barton in the 15thC. Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 23/08/2026The fabulous 17th pulpit at St Nicholas, Oddington sits on a beautifully turned newel post, I can imagine it being replaced by a spring so dull preachers could be catapulted over the church by a bored congregation! #SundaySermons 2809
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 21/08/2026The teeny 18thC font at St John of Jerusalem, Winkburn is barely large enough to even dip a toe in. Overshadowed by the arch behind it, it's now been relegated to a glorified candle stand 🕯️ #FontsOnFriday 0343

Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 18/08/2026The intricate detail on the headress of Cecily Sacheverall d1528-38 is absolutely stunning, I assume it's embroidery. Buried with her husband at Holy Trinity, Ratcliffe-on-Soar theirs is the oldest and finest of a number of alabaster monuments to be found to the family in the church. #TextileTuesday 1213

Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 15/08/2026The tower at Holy Trinity, Rothwell is now a rather dumpy affair. Once taller with a spire it was hit by lightning in 1660 causing it to collapse and probably damaging quite a bit of the church. The tower was repaired and given a little spirelet to keep it company. #SteepleSaturday 0203

Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 10/08/2026The helm on top of the monument of Ralph Sacheverell d1539 at Holy Trinity, Ratcliffe-on-Soar seems at first sight to have been put there solely as an excellent spot for Ralph to leave his wig... #MonumentsMonday 050
Fiona Chartres @chartresfi.bsky.social · 08/08/2026The 14thC tower at St Peter and St Paul, Great Bowden has a mini, almost reticent steeple.
