it’s amazing to me that first apple invented the least lossy user interface ever (multi-touch) — where you interact with software controls *directly* & instantly and now the next “big thing” is writing text instructions, the slowest, most disintermediated and lossy way possible

they COULD design their app to make it actually serve the customer, with an easy “reorder” button that would duplicate the order exactly without error it would be: 1. utterly reliable 2. faster 3. cheaper so much “ai” is a sloppy patch for learned helplessness at the corporate level

I am not joking when I say this. Spotify, Apple Music, and streaming in general is over. Bandcamp Fridays is now very, very good. You don't know yet because all Bandcamp Friday bangers circulating today is from 2-3 sales ago. Bandcamp Fridays et al has solved infinite bangers.

I subscribe to 500 Songs because: a) it's a truly great piece of 20th century social history writing b) getting to watch A Quality Autistic Creative Project playing out in real time that makes me feel more comfortable in my own inability to predict the length or frequency of my own creative output.

California has spent over $400 million in settlements for Law Enforcement misconduct since 2010. I know because I built a site to track it: captainacab.com We're updating every week, and slowly expanding across the country. (boosts welcome)

LAX famously has difficulty with signs.
A blue, slightly cloudy sky in the background. There's a row of airport landing lights forming a leading diagonal line, and a 737 is on approach with landing gear down. In the foreground is a sign saying "TO AIRPORT", with an arrow pointing up.

The airport is on the ground, the planes are in the sky. Silly LAX.

A good day was had at Cranky Dorkfest by all. A++ would Dorkfest again next year should the opportunity present itself.
A Singapore Airlines 777 in Star Alliance livery is landing at LAX. There is a basically cloudless blue sky surrounding it, LA-typical flora in the midfield, and a throng of people pointing their phone cameras at it in the foreground of the bottom-left.

Arguably the greatest song to be recorded 4 times by 3 iterations of a band under 3 different names and in 2 languages, and then remixed once before it reached number 2 (eventually scoring a number 1 when it was covered by my mate's little brother's band a decade and a half later)

STUPID AIRLINE TICKET SHIT I HAVEN'T HAD TO THINK ABOUT IN 10 YEARS BUT DO NOW: Alaska now book all of their round-trip tickets with round-trip fares. These cost the same as booking individual one-way, but if you cancel the return leg, your ticket is rebooked as a one-way fare ON THE DAY YOU CHANGE

Assume AAA's 15k/year cost figure. You pay that after taxes. To have $15k to spend at a fairly typical take home rate of 60% of gross pay, you need to make a marginal $25k to pay out that $15k.

A statistic that haunts me because it is 100% true and shocking and useless in advocacy precisely because it is true and shocking: Policy that enables a 1-car lifestyle rather than 2 is equivalent to giving a family a $25,000 annual pay raise.

Reagan-era tax cuts dramatically reduced the number of tax brackets, especially at the top. Today, the 37% rate applies to everyone making above roughly $600,000. That means the tax code largely treats someone earning $1 million the same as someone earning $100 million.
Graph titled "Postwar Top Tax Bracket and Rate" from Roosevelt Institute, displaying two lines from 1940 to 2025. The green line represents "Top Marginal Rate" with percentages from 0% to 100%, while the purple line shows "Top Income Bracket (2025 dollars)" with values from 0M to 5M. The graph indicates a decline in the top marginal rate over time and relatively stable income brackets in recent decades.
