The thing that most helped me develop this outlook and let go of utilitarianism was building teams. Tech is obsessed with getting the smartest, best programmers onto a team. But the reality is that you cannot be The Most Programmer. Programming is a skill that (like all skills, really) is […]

Dear Bluesky - A million years ago I found a figure on how much it costs the US Army in retraining every time Microsoft changes office. It was a great number, but that bookmark was like three computers ago. Have any of you seen it?

For my birthday, my brother-in-law gave me a 4992-digit hex number that, when used as a seed for Python’s random number generator, makes it so that printing a sequence of “random” ASCII characters actually prints a birthday greeting. I find it rather amazing that this is possible! This is the […]

Being an immigrant means choosing who in your life you're physically proximate to. Most of the time, for me, that's been an easy choice. Now, for the next foreseeable future, there's people who need me, on both sides of a quite wide ocean, and I suspect I'm going to crossing quite a lot over […]

I saw a pretty major contributor to Rust projects making the case for LLMs being used in programming, and one of the things they liked is that you can ask it all the technical questions you want without feeling embarrassed, and what an indictment of the work culture of software engineering that is.

with alt text "Reacher is autistic... his special interest is fucking up bad guys."
This review makes Reacher sound more interesting than any of its advertising does, tbh.

I used to think Jack Reacher was simply the apotheosis of the military badass archetype: exceptionally well-trained, preposterously competent, violently allergic to bullshit, and possessed of the sort of laconic self-assurance that comes from knowing that virtually every interpersonal disagreement can, if necessary, be resolved by throwing someone through drywall.

Then I actually watched the show with Terra here in Colombia and the entire character abruptly became clear. Alan Richtsons portrayal is spot on.

Reacher is autistic.

The man owns exactly one outfit. He has systematized his diet. He regards small talk as an annoying tax imposed upon human communication. He answers rhetorical questions with the grave sincerity of someone correcting an error in a technical manual.

Women can flirt with him so aggressively that nearby wildlife begins displaying courtship behavior, and Reacher will continue discussing ballistics because that is the subject currently under consideration. He doesn't own a house. He barely owns possessions. His preferred organizational system appears to be nothing can become clutter if you own literally fucking nothing.

He encounters some obscure technical detail and immediately produces a twelve-minute dissertation on military logistics, forensic pathology, regional bus schedules, or the precise tensile properties of whatever object he's about to beat someone unconscious with.

And then I realized the most important part. Jack Reacher DOES have a special interest.

Unfortunately for the bad guys, his special interest is fucking up bad guys.

That's the whole franchise.

A six-foot-five, 250-pound autistic man wanders into town, notices that something is not as it is supposed to be, and becomes constitutionally incapable of leaving until he has identified the discrepancy, reconstructed the entire criminal conspiracy from first principles, and beaten everyone responsible to death with the nearest piece of civic infrastructure.
