The Tumbler Ridge newspaper puts it better than I could
Hey.

This is a message out there to all of you who, in trying to create a tribute to our children, choose to use AI.

When you feed these images into AI, you're feeding their data set. That means they will now use little pieces of Abel and Maya and the others the next time someone asks for the image of a 12 year old.

While most companies are trying their best, some of them aren't; a few weeks back, Grok was freely and cheerily offering up images of naked, underage children. This is horrifying.

I know that some people out there are trying to create clickbait images, but not you. You're trying to show your respect and love, but could we ask you do it in a different way? There are actual provided images of most of the victims out there; sharing those is equally as powerful and less dicey, morally. The RCMP even created a composite for you.

Thanks.

This poem is dedicated to anyone heading back into work and having to endure dull conversation about what they got up to during the Christmas holidays.
New Year Office Chitchat

How was your Christmas?
you ask

and I think
of the bloodstained rug

and the silent scraping
of the spade

in the garden
at midnight

and the wash wash
washing of my hands

and the dreams,
those endless dreams

which haunt
the night-time

and smudge
their thumbprints

on the day
to come

and I reply
Super, thanks. Yours?

This year was also the year in which I failed to write a new end-of-year poem.
This was the year that was not the year

This was the year that was not the year
I repaired the bathroom tap
and emptied out the kitchen drawer
of a lifetime’s worth of crap.

This was the year that was not the year
in which I launched a new career.
A West End hit eluded me
as did Time Person of the Year.

This was the year that was not the year
I became a household name.
Action figures were not sold of me.
I wasn’t made a dame.

This was the year that was not the year
I spent less time on my phone.
A night of passion did not happen
in a boutique hotel in Rome.

This was the year that was the year
I didn't get that much done –
much the same as the year before,
much like the one to come.

Can't wait for the loosened up, non-perfect, but quickly shipped AI-enhanced updates to hit my banking and insurance services next year. Im sure there will be no issues there at all.
software development in 2026 is going to require some to loosen up a little
code doesn't have to be as perfectly crafted the way we did it pre-ai
call it slop if you want, but if you're still demanding perfection on every pr while your competitors are shipping "slop" that works.. you're fighting from a disadvantaged position
shipping velocity matters more than perfection

can't win them all
Yesterday
Hey Ed I love your work, been following for ages and agree with everything you say about Al, and particularly LLMs.
One thing I would love to see on better offline, and thought I'd share it with you as an idea for a show that you can freely take, is an episode that talks about how good LLMs are - what they can do, how people use them etc, because to my mind it is brilliant, amazing even, technology, which makes some workers more efficient and helps every man on the street to search the internet more quickly (if not reliably). It just isn't anything more than any of that, and that in itself isn't worth a 10th of the investment, valuation and hype we've seen, and it's never going to be, but I think if you did a show where you talked about all the good things about it but in that context it would give a lot of credibility to your criticism as it shows balance.
Just a thought, and thanks!
