I’ve started inviting my older kids to hang out as I’m editing. I try to narrate the decisions I’m making. How to recast a sentence, why I reject spell check suggestions, things I leave in place to honor the author’s voice. I badly want them to think of writing and editing as a human art…

Not a great picture, but the Purple Martins are back!
At the tope of a pole down by the bay are three Purple Martin nest boxes. On the one at the very top of the pole, a pair of Purple Martins sits. They almost certainly have eggs or chicks in the nest box. They have driven off several seagulls who have come too close.

Poorly shot picture of two baby chickens sitting in flower baskets destroying grandma's flowers. Momma hen and two babies on the door to the porch. They don't give a fuck. Chickens love this pot for some reason. There are 6 chickens crammed in. Poor petunia is crushed. Wide shot of chickens on porch.

Book III in Love in Netherford, THE GAME OF HEARTS, features an apothecary and a werewolf who have fought and flirted for an entire book, finally saying (and doing) what they mean. Tropes? We have a few. And then there's the bear-napping. This June! Link: geni.us/GameoH
a graphic that describes the tropes and features of the book with arrows protruding from an image of the cover: M/M romance & spice, adventures in Faerie, Neurodivergent representation, introvert/extrovert pairing, bear-napping, enemies to friends to enemies to business partners to lovers to..., OK, but what if Emma was a werewolf?

Editing a book is not cold logic and pattern recognition. It’s more like conducting a symphony. Yeah, the basic beats might be metronomic, but that “algorithm” cannot reflect the chemistry of a group of musicians, the balance of a room, the audience response. That’s for the human to gauge.
