As expected, Anmore Mayor and Metro Vancouver vice-chair John McEwen has been declared the Conservative Party's candidate for Port Moody-Burquitlam. Unlike White Rock's Megan Knight, McEwen removed himself from the ballot before the deadline, and based on past elections is the slight underdog here.

The Conservatives have named former leadership candidate Caroline Elliott their candidate in West Vancouver-Capilano. The riding has gone to the BC Liberals and then Conservatives in big numbers since it was created in 1991, so she is all but certain to be in the legislature.

The only directly elected board member for Metro Vancouver is going to be automatically acclaimed this month. David Hocking will represent Electoral Area A, which population wise is 98% the UBC area west of Blanca Street. Hocking is a former Bowen Island councillor, and is moving to the UBC area.

The NDP faced a day of snap election questions and arguably their top minister calling it quits. The Conservatives had a day of former rivals holding hands and the party as energized as its been in months. Elections aren't won on the first day, but it's one the opposition is happy with.
