My theory is that there are rival opinions about who counts as "people". Some extend it beyond the parameters of humanity, as far as animals or bacteria. Others shrink it to only certain humans, and those are the ones trying to add computers to their already shriveled definition.

I don’t remember whose insight this is, but it blew my mind when I first read that to understand American history you have to get that race law was designed to increase the number of enslavable people (one-drop rule) and decrease the number of claimants to indigenous land (blood quantum)

FWIW I don’t think masked thugs on the street has anything to do with fiscal policy missteps. It’s the softpawing of the extreme right and the tacit acceptance of norm breaches around xenophobia that have emboldened people onto the street. This is why the “legitimate concerns” frame is so dangerous.
