New Yorkers! Read this thread about the absurd sham of an "AI Safety" City Council hearing today, then please submit your own written testimony about the real present harms and crimes of these AI companies.

And an important addition: the theft is ongoing and constant, as they continue to train off these stolen works, off the distillation of the outputs of previous theft-based models, and so on. I think some folks think it's some "that's awful that happened but it's the past now". It's still happening.

And, as such, it must be stopped permanently going forward, retroactively compensated, and also any previous theft-based models destroyed, etc. That is not impossible. It is in fact far, far less of a demand than "let us steal the entirety of everyone's life work and data to wield against them"

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

apparently nappy.co, an invaluable stock photo resource, is shutting down in a few months because, well, AI destroys everything. this blows. their statement: nappy.co/future just fucking sucks that AI dipshits essentially get to take away our choices because they're incapable of making their own

4 weeks into the school year and I’ve thought about AI…hardly at all. I love the foundation of our classroom so far and it is really difficult for me to think how it would be “better” to bring any notion or AI into it.

Y'all there's a piece in their second-to-last issue from a writer who... it's just unbelievable. She has a clear longer history of poetry and essays of her own pre-AI, but is just transparently publishing slop stories in various mags over the last year.

From that same story: "The porch light swung like it had something to say." "Not a question. Not a call. Simply sound." "No echo came. Only the air, holding nothing."

I've encountered another respected literary journal (flash fiction) that appears to be mass-publishing blatant AI slop. Like, one in three pieces in their most recent issue. I've contact them privately about it, but depending on response I'm just kind of tired of holding back on this shit.

Yes, Pangram backs the results. No, Pangram is not necessary in order to flag them pretty immediately by eye.

In terms of the important dialogues around racism factoring into suspicions/accusations of AI—most of the stories I'm flagging here are by white dudes, and so I do have to wonder if that plays in at all.

Anyone have experience or advice on filing FOIL requests with New York? With the ongoing bombardment of undisclosed AI slop ads, especially online, I'm looking to find out if the AG's office has actually fined ANY company yet under S8420A, requiring disclosure of "synthetic performers"

Under the law some companies should be facing hundreds of thousands in fines already, and I've heard zero news, so I expect that hasn't happened.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Louder for those in the back: Do NOT fall for the AI three-card monte trick. Pick your ONE outrage (data centers, law-breaking hacks, hype, learning loss, military targeting, environmental harm, job loss, economic risk, etc.) and fight back. Do not let AI techbros set the agenda for your future.
