I once threw a book on the floor and stamped on it. A critic had dismissed GAUDY NIGHT as a 'woman's novel'. Dorothy L. Sayers, spent her life being told a clever woman was too much. But she it turns out she was hiding something bigger than a bad review… lucyworsley.substack.com/p/harriet-va...

Harriet Vane got her happy ending. Dorothy L. Sayers didn’t.
The creator of Lord Peter Wimsey gave her fictional self everything she was denied, and kept a giant lifelong secret

Yeah, we gotta do better at recognizing that: "changing or lying about your political positions for electoral advantage" and "choosing when and when not to talk about specific political positions you honestly hold" are two wholly different things. The first is amoral; the second is sensible.

that’s right the internet started going irreversibly downhill the day Reader died
Technology you’re most nostalgic for: Google Reader
Especially when I was a writer and business journalist, but even afterwards, I loved Google Reader as a way to organize news articles and feel like I got through them. It was just a great interface. I use Feedly now, which is pretty good to read news, but doesn't quite hit like Google Reader used to hit.

Reading about Japan's first astronaut, who was a chainsmoker and spent most of his mission being violently sick. He died earlier this year, RIP to a real one.
Akiyama was not a trained astronaut, scientist nor engineer. During his time aboard Mir, Akiyama gave live reports each day documenting life aboard the station, but his apparent discomfort led to him being described as the first "antihero in space". He described his struggles such as space sickness and craving for cigarettes. During training, he quit smoking cigarettes, having previously smoked four packs a day. Before liftoff, when asked what he looked forward to most upon his return to Earth, he said "I can't wait to have a smoke". His fellow cosmonauts later reported, in regards to his nausea, that they "hadn't ever seen a man vomit that much."

i think the "flyover country deserves representation" is a low-key strong talking point. "we don't want a court dominated by harvard and yale."

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

Edward Hopper, August in the City, 1945
Very strangely composed painting of the corner of a building, ostensibly in a city. The doorway at right is ornate, with a triangular, sculptural lintel and wooden door. In the center, three windows reveal an interior view, including a figure that at first looks like a person but, upon closer inspection, is actually a statue. At upper right, a street gives way to a tree-filled area at back.

here is what i think: we're not consumers or spectators, we are participants with agency. you should not hope that democrats will do anything. you must work to force them to do the right thing. the odds are long, but we are far from the first americans to face long odds. we will win.

May 7th 1842 - The Illinois Advocate and State Register printed an article about the beheading of 6 bodies. Little did they know, they were all vampires and victims of Abraham Lincoln 📽️📅 Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
3 Screenshots from the move "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" (2012): First, a man in period clothing with a patterned waistcoat and rolled-sleeve shirt sits at a candlelit desk strewn with books and a quill, glancing to his left. Second, the same figure seen from behind holds an open broadsheet titled “Illinois Advocate and State Register” by flickering candlelight. Third, a close-up of the newspaper headline reading “Six Headless Bodies Found Near Springfield! Aaron Stibel, Jr. Among The Dead.” above the start of an article.

FDR’s Fireside chat on March 9, 1937 explaining his proposal to expand the Supreme Court stands up surprisingly well. “We have reached the point as a nation where we must take action to save the Constitution from the Court and the Court from itself.”/1
We have, therefore, reached the point as a nation where we must take action to save the Constitution from the Court and the Court from itself….We want a Supreme Court which will do justice under the Constitution and not over it. In our courts we want a government of laws and not of men.
I want—as all Americans want—an independent judiciary as proposed by the framers of the Constitution. That means a Supreme Court that will enforce the Constitution as writtten, that will refuse to amend the Constitution by the artibrary exercise of judicial power—in other words by judicial say-so. It does not mean a judiciary so independent that it can deny the existence of which which are universally recognized.
