The bizarre culture that’s sprung up around Silicon Valley AI companies - which overlaps hugely with rationalist and effective altruist circles - appears to be seriously pressuring some women into attending sex parties for the sake of networking. This is, needless to say, horrifying.

The purpose of SlutCon is to help ease men who are scared of approaching women, and for women who simply enjoy flirting to be in an environment where that happens a lot, since there's generally a dearth of that
At the same time, many - probably most! - women do Not want to be flirted with or propositioned by men they don't know. When a small scene only has a handful of large, well-known events, each one has disproportionate impact on everybody's ideas of acceptable behavior among other members of their milieu.
Attending the same events = specific shared context. Means
you're somewhat on the same page.
I suspect that the men who publicly raised concerns about SlutCon's impact on the scene are being megaphones for private objections and distresses they've heard from women in the scene who would NOT be comfortable at an event like that, but who don't voice it publicly because they suspect they'd suffer socially for doing so. That going to SlutCon to be flirted with gives women social cachet, and squirming at the idea means you're [not cool, can't get with the program, are probably a wokescold or a prude etc etc other pejoratives] and therefore, that you'll be excluded or held at a distance
Now, if this scene were purely a social scene, that'd be perfectly fine. Don't go to parties that don't suit you!! The issue arises because it's NOT purely a social scene. This scene is inarguably tied up with Al safety, research, and the SF tech scene in general.
When consistently being invited to the right parties is professionally advantageous, and when SlutCon itself **is** going to be an excellent networking opportunity for people in those fields, it's not neutral that {sexual proclivities} are the filtering mechanism that determines who's in the room. It means that promiscuity & forwardness is explicitly professionally advantageous.
And, if the norms of SlutCon influence the norms of that milieu outside of the e…My suspicion is that men come out of the event more bold, more forward, and with the expectation that events attended by former flirt-girls are fair game for SlutCon-style forwardness. This creates a hostile environment for women who just want to socialize and work with these men, without being propositioned. And without pretending that they're cool with being sexualized for the sake of their inclusion in the scene.
I don't think we have solutions yet, but it's important that we can talk about it, at least.

the purpose of SlutCon is to help men who are scared of women to start liking women, by putting them in proximity to women who like men and aren't scared of men
I'm not attending or involved in any way, but this is very aligned to my own mission and I'm rooting for their success

Here it is from a little further back. The pedestrian underpass is a completely separate tunnel to the left, with cars and bikes in the main tunnel. Safe access for all modes! Bravo York! If this was the US it would be a single tunnel with 3ft gutter sidewalk and sharrows

I am impressed with York! They turned their two-way two-lane underpass into a two-way single-lane light controlled underpass in order to fit a cycle track so families could bike to the National Railway Museum 🤩

TL;DR, you are not relieved of moral agency simply because you don't know what the output of your system will be. If anything, there is elevated moral culpability because you didn't take that time to stop negative outcomes. Ie, you were careless.

If you create a system that goes around stealing personal data, *you* are the morally culpable agent, not the system. This should be very straightforward, but we've been under a public relations assault intended to waive AI companies of responsibility, anthropomorphizing code systems.

Sacramento might have California’s most logical sidewalk cycling law: 1) Prohibited only when there’s an on-street low stress bikeway provided, and 2) Only when there’s a demonstrated bike/walk conflict probability, and 3) Only when the sidewalk cycling prohibition is promoted via signage
“10.76.010 Riding bicycles on sidewalks.
   A. No person shall ride a bicycle on a sidewalk where a sign is posted indicating that bicycling is prohibited. The city manager shall designate sidewalks where such signs are posted upon a finding that:
      1. The sidewalk abuts a road that is designated a "Low Stress Bikeway" using the criteria for the Facility Selection Guidelines in the City of Sacramento Bicycle Master Plan; and
      2. There is either a demonstrated or probable conflict between pedestrians and bicycles. This may be shown by information including, but not limited to: 311 reports, incident data, or estimated high pedestrian activity determined by counts or adjacent land uses and densities.”

Read SPUR report on what successful cities have done to provide housing It is not possible to solve housing crisis with only market units because cities need affordable workforce housing to function, but real estate investment needs rent to rise faster than inflation www.spur.org/sites/defaul...
Active city and regional financing and development entities. Copenhagen and Tokyo have created
strong financing and development agencies, which act alongside and in partnership with private
developers, nonprofits and cooperatives to develop infrastructure, leverage the value of governmentowned land assets, and finance and develop new housing.
Streamlined planning and regulatory approvals for housing. Most of the cities profiled in this report
have planning and regulatory systems with less local control and fewer conditional approval processes
than is the case in California and the Bay Area. The most dramatically different approach is in Tokyo,
where landowners and developers enjoy simplified zoning regulations and relatively greater freedom to
develop urban parcels with the residential product types and densities that the market will support.
Greater government involvement in land markets. Many of the case-study cities play an active role in
either acquiring land or regulating land transactions to mitigate the role that land market speculation
plays in driving up housing prices.
Robust tenant protections. Through the creation of rent price indexes (Berlin) or broader tenant rights
and protections (Amsterdam), many of these cities actively support renting and renters as a critical and
valued component of the housing sector.
Nonprofit and cooperative leadership in housing delivery. Compared to most U.S. cities, a greater
percentage of the housing sock in these case-study cities is controlled by nonprofit agencies and
cooperatives, either independent entities or organizations linked to the national or local governments.
Given the already strong nonprofit housing sector in the Bay Area, this model may be something that
