So so so so cool. To how many other city needs should this "long-time resident" or "avid cyclist" objection process apply? "No fire hydrant there, I like to park there" or "no services for unhoused people there, that would bother me" or "no hospital there, too many sirens" or?? YOU LIVE IN A SOCIETY

Hyperbolic rhetoric like that (“elected officials approving of mid-rise development in a commercial district is fascism”) does an extreme disservice to addressing the rise of actual authoritarianism in our national politics. It dilutes & distracts from real & immediate dangers to our democracy.

It is not fascism to build more housing within the scope and demands of the law, after very extensive public debate. If you think it is, maybe don't run to join the Council (as Moni is doing) you are calling fascist, given that you will then also have to follow the state's housing laws.

For all that it's been barely reported in the UK press, it's still hard to understate the importance of the stance @labourunionsuk.bsky.social has taken on trans and non-binary rights this week. Every single trade union affiliated to the party of government has stood up and said we will not comply.
Joint statement from National TULO

Solidarity with the trans and non-binary community

Labour's 11 affiliated trade unions stand in total solidarity with the trans and non-binary community.

Trans rights are human rights, and trans rights are workers' rights.

We in the trade union movement will do all we can to stand up for our trans members and all our trans siblings, to protect them from persecution, harassment and attack.

The government must act now to protect all trans people, to make sure their rights are protected, expanded and upheld in our workplaces and communities.

I would encourage you to take no comfort from polls. If they’re right, great. Better, though, to assume they are wrong and act as you would if the polls said your desired result is way behind. (And they are probably wrong.) Here’s a Halloween poll from a decade ago to motivate you.
A screenshot of the New York Times homepage from October 31st, 2016. It shows a poll result on a blue background at the very top of the page, just under the New York Times’ logo: “Presidential Forecast: Chance of winning >> 90% Clinton, 10% Trump.” The face of each candidate is positioned next to their poll results.

It’s *absurd* that @alanakinrich.medsky.social would be treated this way at a community meeting, especially since the message this sends is that parents of young children are not allowed to participate. Completely unacceptable! We should be making space for parents, people with evening jobs, etc.

Waymo makes transit service worse in San Francisco. Their vehicles block bus zones, double park where the bus cannot get by, get stuck and generally suck. They are also getting noticeably worse as time goes on and the company pushes the boundaries of what it can get away with.

The people providing life-saving gender-affirming care in the current political environment are absolute heroes. It is incredibly shameful that @governor.ca.gov would veto a bill to protect them at this time of huge need. I have nothing but contempt for his decision here.

In a massive dataset of over 10,000 cities around the world, the strongest association with distance travelled by cycling was not climate, topography, or even infrastructure - it was *gasoline prices* doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
Figure 3 from "Global health and climate benefits from walking and cycling infrastructure" by Adam Millard-Balla, Monisha Reginalda, Yasmina Yusufa, and Christopher Bian. The figure shows factors associated with distance travelled by cycling and walking, arranged in order of effect size. For cycling, the largest effects are gasoline prices, GDP per capita, rail service, steep terrain (negative effect), minimum temperature (negative effect), population density, and bicycle lanes. For walking, the largest effects are population density, gasoline prices, bicycle lanes, and maximum temp (negative effect).

Fig. 3 Caption: Factors influencing active travel. Each coefficient represents the impact of a one-SD change in each variable on the share of kilometers traveled by cycling (A) and walking (B). For each city-level variable such as density, the model estimates a separate coefficient for each country. The shaded area shows the distribution of country-level coefficients; for density, for example, the effect on walking ranges from about zero to ~0.11, excluding one outlier. For country-level variables such as gasoline prices, there is only a single coefficient. Variables are ordered by the size of their absolute effect in the median country—density and gasoline prices have the greatest impact on walking and gasoline prices and income (GDP per capita) on cycling. The minimum temperature variable shows the marginal effect of both the linear and squared terms. One might expect climate to have a major impact on active travel, and many studies highlight the impact of weather on daily and seasonal travel decisions (9, 25). However, in our model, there is a negligible association between precipitation and the mode shares of walking and cycling. Hotter temperatures decrease walking but have no effect on travel by bicycle. Colder temperatures only reduce walking and cycling in colder climates (SI Appendix for further Discussion). At the national level, gasoline price has the largest association with the share of travel by active modes. A one-SD increase in the price per liter (equivalent to US $0.40) is associated with a ~1.0 percentage point increase in walking and a ~0.5 percentage point increase in cycling—notable given that the mode share of cycling across the entire dataset is just ~0.9%. These findings echo a large volume of research that shows how vehicle travel declines in line with rising fuel prices (26). Gasoline prices also have an indirect effect in promoting denser, mixed-use development (27).
