Really glad to see this feature analytics from @kuanbutts.bsky.social and board advocacy from @therealjeanwalsh.bsky.social Would love to see a ridership-weighted version of these horrible reliability figures - it's not just that they're bad, it's that they're bad on big lines like 1T and 51A.

In 2015, AC Transit chose Clever Devices’ proprietary BusTime AVL system. A decade+ of implementation problems have left predictions unreliable, while its separate interface makes realtime data feed incompatible with Google Maps, Transit, and other apps, leading to mass confusion b/t apps.

This quote is nuts. How do you know if you're succeeding in "deliver[ing] bus service every day" unless you measure it, look at the measurements, and fix problems? Like, y'all check the fuel gauge on buses before they depart, right?

AC Transit cannot rebuild reliability blind
Riders accepted a less frequent network on the promise that it would be more dependable. The board should now make reliability visible every week.

1T, which is the East Bay's premier BRT, is supposed to have a median wait of 5 mins. But riders are actually waiting on average for 13 mins for a bus, and 5% of the time there is a 53 minute wait which means ZERO buses running on the entire line!
Weekdays: Route 1T riders typically waited 13.0 minutes; 5% of riders waited at least 53.2 minutes.

Weekends: Route 1T riders typically waited 13.8 minutes; 5% of riders waited at least 52.6 minutes.

More noise needs to be made about the problem of dropped runs at AC Transit. Certain lines seem to be worse than others, and some days and times as well. Board policy is no back to back cancellations and no cancellations for runs more than 30 minutes apart (i think it’s 30) @kuanbutts.bsky.social

Most importantly - this is cool! Civic tech crashed and burned along with all the optimism of the '10s. There was some naivety, yes, but the cynicism that replaced it ha been immeasurably worse. Here's to hoping this world resuscitates.

Noteworthy and alarmng from @rideact.bsky.social ridership report: key AC Transit routes show continually plummeting ridership (nearly 10% YoY in some cases) after Realign roll out. This occurring amidst broader regional uptick in transit use. actransit.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=...

Their post points out some of the remaining work to be done. The road is much safer than it was, but people are still dying there. A big lesson is that the city *can* make its streets safer, but it should not require advocacy like this to make it happen.

Continues to be appalling that there is no bus express lane on the Bay Bridge. Current TransBay #ACTransit bus is stuck in mixed traffic, is going to take 1.5 hours to do a ~20 min ride. Why do we punish transit riders by making them suffer through single occupancy vehicle traffic?

The seating requirement on the MCI Transbay AC Transit buses is truly a nightmare. Overfull buses Tues - Thurs with riders negotiating over seats while other riders are being outright rejected+ no backup bus available. I'm trying to commute via transit with a 1 y/o & the unreliability is killing me.

Since 2021, electric suburban "TER" trains run every 10 minutes all day (every 20 minutes Sundays) 36km from Diamniadio to Dakar. This amounts to better service than any suburban/commuter rail line in the US.
Diamniadio station seemed a bit overbuilt but may become more important in the futureThe train was pretty empty leaving Diamniadio but standing room only one or two stations later

What fresh hell is this? In the Oakland budget survey being sent out - paving and safety upgrades were funded through Measure U - why are they being sent to the choppy block when the general budget is in turmoil?

Timely given this was my treatment for using the bus in downtown Oakland this evening. It's clear Council lacks a strong grasp of what the day to day experience of transit dependency is like - something that significantly impacts the daily lived experience of residents they purport to advocate for.

Naive question: is there a way to have both? Like, is it feasible to have both track widths available, overlapping, for this tunnel? I assume no because std gauge is too close in width to broad (3.5" difference-ish), but... maybe yes?
