If Scottish fire departments can figure out how to drive down narrow Scottish roads just fine then OFD can figure out how to drive down much wider US roads with bike lanes just fine

Here it is from a little further back. The pedestrian underpass is a completely separate tunnel to the left, with cars and bikes in the main tunnel. Safe access for all modes! Bravo York! If this was the US it would be a single tunnel with 3ft gutter sidewalk and sharrows

I am impressed with York! They turned their two-way two-lane underpass into a two-way single-lane light controlled underpass in order to fit a cycle track so families could bike to the National Railway Museum 🤩

Read SPUR report on what successful cities have done to provide housing It is not possible to solve housing crisis with only market units because cities need affordable workforce housing to function, but real estate investment needs rent to rise faster than inflation www.spur.org/sites/defaul...
Active city and regional financing and development entities. Copenhagen and Tokyo have created
strong financing and development agencies, which act alongside and in partnership with private
developers, nonprofits and cooperatives to develop infrastructure, leverage the value of governmentowned land assets, and finance and develop new housing.
Streamlined planning and regulatory approvals for housing. Most of the cities profiled in this report
have planning and regulatory systems with less local control and fewer conditional approval processes
than is the case in California and the Bay Area. The most dramatically different approach is in Tokyo,
where landowners and developers enjoy simplified zoning regulations and relatively greater freedom to
develop urban parcels with the residential product types and densities that the market will support.
Greater government involvement in land markets. Many of the case-study cities play an active role in
either acquiring land or regulating land transactions to mitigate the role that land market speculation
plays in driving up housing prices.
Robust tenant protections. Through the creation of rent price indexes (Berlin) or broader tenant rights
and protections (Amsterdam), many of these cities actively support renting and renters as a critical and
valued component of the housing sector.
Nonprofit and cooperative leadership in housing delivery. Compared to most U.S. cities, a greater
percentage of the housing sock in these case-study cities is controlled by nonprofit agencies and
cooperatives, either independent entities or organizations linked to the national or local governments.
Given the already strong nonprofit housing sector in the Bay Area, this model may be something that

Joel's whole thing is avoiding responsibility He recently claimed that AC Transit board members cannot control bus reliability, and then proceeded to complain that Oakland has built bike lanes 🙄 (Staff presented to the board last year that bike lanes have not affected bus speeds or reliability)
What would you do to deliver faster, more reliable buses in Oakland this term?

- Board members have limited ability to directly deliver faster or more reliable bus service, as operational decisions fall within the purview of the General Manager and AC Transit staff. Moreover, efforts by AC Transit to improve service can be affected by decisions made by the City of Oakland regarding street design and transportation infrastructure. For example, proposals to expand bike lanes on certain streets may reduce roadway capacity and contribute to increased traffic congestion, which can slow bus operations and affect service reliability.

Central Valley has been unanimously passing datacenter bans and is already wary of CAHSR If CAHSR actually goes forward with their business plan to build datacenters using their access to land and power, then that will permanently doom the HSR project www.fresnobee.com/news/local/h...
The rail authority in its latest business plan floated allowing data centers to lease the future train’s land and power source since state law requires it to run without subsidies when it’s fully operational. The agency is working with private investors who could help develop the train’s corridor and it’s looking for others who could help develop a utility-grade power generation system. Those partners will also be tasked with helping the agency commercialize those assets and could officially pitch leasing resources for data centers as part of a development deal with the rail authority.

Methane is 80 times worse than CO2 but does break down quicker, so now is the CRUCIAL moment in our planet's history for REDUCING it This is the absolute worst time to introduce a methane boom www.edf.org/climate/meth...
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere. Even though CO2 has a longer-lasting effect, methane sets the pace for warming in the near term.

About 30% of today’s global warming is driven by methane from human actions.

Supporting datacenters is climate science denial www.wired.com/story/us-dat...
Adding that much natural gas power comes with a hefty climate cost, particularly because many of the facilities are being built with inefficient turbines, which can increase emissions. As WIRED has reported, some of these gas plants are permitted to emit more greenhouse gases each year than many small- and medium-sized countries.
