I a) think this is true, and that a lot of urban Portlanders dismiss the importance of getting our suburban neighbors to come into the city but b) think Bistecca wasn’t the right concept for the space. I loved Mama Bird, but if I was in the mood to pay Bistecca prices I’d go somewhere else.

But tariffs aren’t Pascuzzi’s only concern. Gas prices are up, too. And he thinks Portland’s dining scene won’t return to its pre-pandemic levels until locals get over their fear of the central city.

“What really happened to Portland is that the suburbs abandoned us,” Pascuzzi said. “Vancouver, Beaverton, Gresham. None of them come here anymore. They’ll take mediocre out there versus coming in here.”

Part of the body of work Be Dammed, Elwha's Healing is a large-scale photocollage made from satellite imagery.
This work addresses the recovery of the Elwha River, located in the northwestern United States, which returned to its natural course in 2014, when its dams-built in the early twentieth century-were removed after decades of activism. As a consequence, native salmon and trout were able to resume their migration, bringing with them marine nutrients that supported the river ecosystem's recovery. The fauna and flora along the riverbanks were also reestablished. This work dialogues with The Collpsing of a Model (Brumadinho) and marks a turning point in Caycedo's practice, which moves beyond denunciation alone to incorporate processes of repair and healing.

A faction trying to win more seats on council doesn’t undermine charter reform at all; the electoral system in the new charter ensures representation of different perspectives. Every two years from now we’re going to see both the left and the center-to-right trying to gain more seats.

Because there’s a District 4 election coming up in November, and moderate-to-very conservatives are desperately trying to stuff the council with candidates who will carry out their whims, break the occasional 6-6 voting ties, and reclaim the power they had prior to the implementation of charter reform.
