The BBC does genuinely seem to be trying to save money where it can; they scrapped an undercover investigation where Amol Rajan went out clubbing with a view to exposing the easy access to poppers because they didn't want to pay for the Amol night rate

Someone at work once asked me what my guilty pleasure was and I immediately shot back “pleasure never makes me feel guilty.” I’ve seldom felt cooler than I did in that moment. Literally one minute later I tripped on an extension cord and hit my head on a whiteboard in front of the entire office

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

There's no evidence of teams shipping software features "in hours instead of weeks" on anything that has real users and $ attached. There's no evidence of agents working autonomously *and* reliably for extended periods. There's no evidence of devs being replaced by AI. It's all lies.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Proponents of "scaled" approaches to software development often argue that 10 teams solving the same problem 10 different ways is wasteful. Wait until they hear about 9 teams waiting for 1 team to make changes to their software. I can live with "waste" when waiting's more expensive.

Nigel Farage, not content with battling against a bin, has opened up a second front and is now also arguing with some toilets.
Facebook post by media creation and obvious charlatan Nigel Farage:

Cambridge City Council have spent £1 million building 'squat toilets' like this.

Labour councillors say the facilities "really enhance the cityscape."

I promise you, Reform councils will never spend your money on this nonsense!

DHH tweet saying “This is why we need competition and open weights in Al. Imagine a world where only Anthropic sat as the moral arbiter of acceptable speech. Fucking ridiculous. (Grok of course did it no problem, same too with Kimi K).” when presented with his blog post using a slur about the Roma people.

Why I can't bring myself to read Neal Asher these days.
Preface from Neal Asher book: “Five years ago, I watched the two Falcon Heavy side boosters come into land at Cape Canaveral Space Force Base.
Honestly, it was like something in a game animation and seemingly too perfect to be believable. Others, I've seen landing on drone ships with names taken from lain
M. Banks' Culture books. Just recently, I saw a huge booster for the Starship come down to be caught between two metal arms - y'know, they caught something the size of a skyscraper like a dropping stick - and that was an astounding feat of engineering. But these are not in isolation, since Spacex, as of last month, has launched over a hundred rockets in 2024.
Meanwhile, the guy who brought this about, the guy who is aiming to make humanity multi-planetary by putting us on Mars, has a few other projects on the go, like building electric cars, burrowing tunnels under cities, putting up a satellite internet system and, perhaps the most important of them all, preventing the totalitarians of our world from killing free speech.
So thank you, Elon Musk, for bringing to reality, right before my eyes, those things I read and dreamed about as a teenager.”
