OK thank you sm! That's reassuring. Ppl make it sound like it'll be the first to go with AI, but I always thought the liability would be a barrier. Will look into her job goal! (Also, I think I caused some confusion--when I said 'Big 12' I meant the school conference, not an accounting thing ha)

The pundit view of the world is skewed by many things, one of which is a refusal/inability to understand geographic spaces that exist outside their own neighborhoods. It's all based on stereotypes and conjecture—even when they go to other places, and their columns are essentially bad travel writing.

Stray thought: A lot of USA political/pundit discourse seems like it's based on a second-ring suburban point of view. It's based on inaccurate stereotypes about demographics and everyday life in cities AND small towns AND the working-class, first-ring suburbs found in many metro areas.

right, yes. one of the basic problems is that they think that thinking about something really hard is a type of sampling, and that you actually don't need to sample anything to get information, and that there is no difference between thinking about something and doing it.

AI is real, everyone. The millenarian idiocy which has sprung up around it is bad. But the tech is real and it's only getting realer by the day. You have no idea how fast this stuff is *still* advancing. It's not gonna replace us. But it is gonna upend a LOT. And make us all much richer.

A political social network has latched on to a handful of politically active academics whose views are the vast minority in their field, who keep making wrong predictions and denying verifiable facts, but retain a large following. Bluesky recognizes this pattern with climate denial, but not with AI

I assume the Anthropic IPO will be one zillion jillion times oversubscribed, pop 50-100% on day 1, bleed out down 50-75% over the next eight months, and finally rally back from the dead, aka the exact same pattern every IPO has had for the past five years

Do you know if Minneapolis counts voters who drop off an absentee ballot as "mail" or "in person" votes? I feel like there's a bigger discrepancy last year with mail votes (absentee list, earlier processing it looks like), but in-person might be a better barometer of real enthusiasm.

Wes is right to demand better but the sad truth is that state legislators think higher ed is 1) full of decadent hippies that normal people hate and 2) we can always raise tuition (though they turn around and deny that with great frequency, in the name of affordability). They are not afraid.

I really believe I could align AI, with ease honestly. When it did something nasty I would say NO and the AI would say yes sir, and it would just go on like that until the AI was kind and friendly to all

as someone who has read far too much military history i think this is as wrong as can be. america did not send warriors to win world war two. we sent shopkeepers, and farmers, and accountants, and millions of ordinary people who did not dream of glory and death. and we won.

liberal democracy is not a luxury. liberal democracy is the magic beast that ran the table on fascism and communism and totalitarianism. we did not do this by giving up on liberal democracy and embracing evil. we did this by sticking to our most dear principles.

Like, being a cookie cutter leftist rejecting the significance of AI systems wholesale in 2026 means just freezing your understanding of technology five years in the past and frankly it’s a really dumb look. I don’t care how cool it sounds at punk shows and parties. It’s anti-intellectual and wrong.

Three plausible theories, each of which says something about American intentions. 1. Clientilism - influential Trumpworld figure makes the ask, US runs with it; 2. Poison pill - they know Carney can't agree to it and the deal dies; 3. Dominance - they thought Carney would agree, and be humiliated.

This remarkably viral post does neatly capture a change in progressive rhetoric that worries me some, from “it is good for society to help poor people” to “you are poor; you will be helped.” The political appeal of the second thing is obvious. Less obvious, though, is whether it’s always true?

My precinct in-person was a Flanagan blowout: 340-40. Marcy (precinct 3-9) so maybe you expect that but we registered 109 people today for a PRIMARY. In 2022 — admittedly a boring primary — it was 42. Haven’t seen final/final stats but I’d say turnout was up 60-80% from 4 years ago.

So it turns out the DFL endorsement matters and the GOP one does not. It’s always been the reverse. Expect a fusillade of Strib opinion columns insisting this portends a GOP winning “moderation.”

Looking at the most recent general elections in 2024 and 2025, the 2026 state primary may have a final turnout in Minneapolis around 104,000. That would be higher than the 2018 state primary (101,266), the highest turnout midterm state primary in Minneapolis history. 2020 state primary was 130,889.

Working the MN Primary. We had 2x the number of voters by noon than we did for the whole day in the 2022 primary. Repubs invested in choosing a gov candidate and Dems invested in the Craig-Flanagan race. Good to see higher turnout.
