Hey California! Be careful this election because the big money creeps are trying to trick you (again).
There's a trap on your ballot in California. Here's how to get past it.
1. Prop 40: 250 billionaires pay with they owe so hospitals, schools, and food assistant survive the federal cuts. Vote yes.
2. Props 41 and 42: paid for by billionaires to cancel prop 40. Vote no.
3. Tell one person, because the confusion is the plan.
Yes I'm 40. No on 41 and 42.

for as long as i've been alive, republicans have ran the same playbook: a few weeks before voting begins, they roll out completely fabricated smear campaigns. these things are always coordinated, so the talking points take over the news. the party is never electorally punished for their dishonesty.

Elite impunity is perhaps the single greatest problem in American politics going back to Gerald Ford’s Watergate pardons. These people keep getting away with it. This needs to stop.

Given that there is not likely to be a national, bipartisan demand for accountability in the wake of Trump — the major distinction with Nixon — any accountability, civil or criminal, will be a partisan and political project that I think should be pursued as vigorously as possible.

unfortunately the median voter is a lead-poisoned mouth-breathing self-centered moron. Ah well.
When Wayne Berner, 72, moved to the Bay Area in 1994, he was stunned to find that the region has 27 different transit agencies. He grew up in the South Side of Chicago and frequently used the three transit agencies to easily get around. But the Discovery Bay resident, who is retired, has found public transit much less convenient in the Bay Area.

Over the years, Berner has used transit to get to baseball games at the Oakland Coliseum, but beyond that, he hasn’t found it very practical. He once tried to take BART to the San Francisco International Airport, but the trains don’t start running until around 5 a.m., making an early flight next to impossible. When he lived in San Ramon, he tried to find a good route for his children to take to school in Concord, but the roughly 20-mile trip would take an hour, maybe longer if they needed to transfer.

Berner will be voting “no” on the Regional Transit Measure in November. He feels that BART especially hasn’t done enough to “control costs.”

“I look at it like, why do you throw more money at a dysfunctional transportation system?” he said. “If the 27 agencies actually sat down and said, ‘OK, we need to really do something,’ I think you get rid of them, you know, unify all those authorities under one or two umbrellas and call it a day. But there’s so much repetition in administrative and leadership costs.”Spohn feels similarly to Berner. He’s lived in a home he owns in the unincorporated Santa Clara County community of San Martin for nearly 40 years. Located south of Morgan Hill and north of Gilroy, the area has limited access to transit. Caltrain doesn’t run service to its two southernmost stations on the weekend, and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority only operates buses in South County.

Spohn, who is retired, said that because of the high cost of living in the Bay Area, he will never vote in favor of another tax or bond measure.

“You’d have to really convince me why I should have to pay a lot more money for something I don’t use,” he said.

it is very cool (read: very not cool) that "What if the entire regional economy immediately exploded?" is a ballot measure in the bay area because we are in the 'touching the hot stove' era of american history. if you live in the bay area you should vote for the regional transit measure.
The ballot initiative would raise the sales tax rate by 0.5 percentage points in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda counties and by 1 percentage point in San Francisco, and is expected to generate roughly $980 million annually for the next 14 years to sustain bus, train, metro and ferry lines.

Many of the region’s transit agencies have already proposed contingency plans if the measure fails. BART said it would likely have to end service at 9 p.m. instead of at midnight, reduce train frequencies to 30 minutes and move from five-line to three-line service outside of peak commute hours. Caltrain has proposed eliminating weekend services, closing more than a third of stations and ending operations around 9 p.m. instead of 1 a.m. AC Transit is looking at reducing service by 16%, while Muni said it could eliminate up to 20 routes, cut service by at least 30% and end regular evening service.

The fiscal cliff facing transit agencies was triggered by the decline in ridership due to the pandemic and hit agencies heavily dependent on fare revenues, like BART, the hardest.SPUR, a nonprofit policy think tank sponsoring the measure, released a report last month that found that if the measure and San Francisco’s Proposition H fail, traffic delays on the Bay Bridge could increase by 33 minutes heading west in the morning and 43 minutes heading east in the evening. Caldecott Tunnel traffic could see delays of an additional 20 minutes in the morning and 27 minutes during the evening commute. Congestion could also worsen along Interstate 580, Interstate 680 and U.S. 101, the report found.

If we're going to ruin way finding could we at least change the sign to 'Take your fucking backpack off"
SF Muni bus at night with it's front sign over cab - that usually has the route number and direction - instead says "fare required"

Subsidize neighborhood bars: www.fingers.email/p/subsidize-...
Meeting public demand that private markets cannot or will not is a normal function of government, or it was until a cabal of American industrials imported and disseminated crank economic theories into the national discourse to poison rank-and-file folks against New Deal liberalism. This country has struggled ever since to countenance even the most self-evidently beneficial forms of municipal socialism, so I’m not so deluded to think taxpayer-funded third places are a near-term goal (though tipsters have since flagged some promising green shoots!) But the demand is there. Americans are lonely as fuck and starved of the joys of the commons. We need a hybrid solution to hold us over, and breweries—comfortable and welcoming though many of them are—ain’t it.

Luckily, a proven model for small-scale, hyper-local, low-overhead hubs of non-optimized, non-extractive community that weave themselves into their surrounding social fabrics already exists: the neighborhood bar. Neighborhood bars are great, but as an on-premise cohort, they’re not exactly doing great. But in order for them become more profitable under the present model, they’d have to pump more alcohol into the populace. Not ideal for public health. So it’s even luckier that we have a method for public-private partnership to prop up American industries collectively deemed vital that are not profitable: the subsidy. You can probably see where I’m headed with this.

It should be political malpractice to enact a “jungle primary” without also including a consensus-forcing mechanism like approval voting or ranked choice. All this drama in California over a nonpartisan primary would be a non-issue if the rules actually captured which candidates have widest appeal.
